This past weekend I went to winterize my two small Merc outboards, and I used the same Quicksilver 90 Hi Perf gear lube that I always used in my Bravo IIIs.

These motors were both new this year and the lower units came pre-filled from the factory as delivered so I'm not sure exacly what it was from new.

When I drained the old gear lube, I couldn't get a good picture to focus and here it looks more like bubbles but in person it looked more like tiny metal flakes like you'd see in metallic paint:

Normal? Serious problem ? :eek::eek::eek:

Also for the first time I read the back of the bottle and it says to shake well. Does anyone shake well before using ???

Phil, with them being brand new, I wouldn't worry about it.

The stuff you're using is great stuff - it's a full synthetic and has benefits over the regular stuff (the regular stuff looks like motor oil color while this stuff is blue/green... which you know). It's not "required" for your engine like it is for Bravo's, but it certainly can't hurt. I see a few hundred motors a year at the shop and that's all we use (regardless of engine) with great results over many years.

Something else you could try is to heat the oil up. Bubbles will quickly disappear.
