Is there a way to get Mercruiser (8.1L ) engine data on a classic raymarine E120 MFD? The engine data is available on the Mercury Vessel View display, so the information is available from the engines.

Mercury's smartcraft is a proprietary implementation on CAN network topology. NEMA 2000 is also a CAN network based on J1939 higher level protocols, but with it's own message format. NEMA 2000 uses Device Net cabling standards. Both "mini" and "micro" cable types are supported, but I've only seen micro cables. Merc uses their own cabling for smartcraft I think.
Most electronics can work with NEMA 2000, but only northstar and navman can work with smartcraft data because brunswick use to own those companies. Supposedly, Merc is working on a gateway to connect smartcraft to NEMA2000. Not every smartcraft message will be able to be gatewayed to NEMA 2000, however.

Yes, If the E120 will accept NMEA2000 Data, Take a Look at the MercMonitor. It acts as a gateway to convert Smartcraft Data to NMEA2000.
That is next on my upgrade list. The twin engine model is close to $1,000 though.
I have not done the upgrade yet so I can offer no further advice other than to check with Merc to confirm compatibility but is is supposed to work with all Smartcraft configs. According to the sell sheet it will transfer quite a bit of data.

I have been looking for some of the same information and ended up finding that the Vessel View hs NMEA 0182 protocol inputs and outputs. I have upgraded all my navigation electronics to Garmin and would like to integrate everything together without replace teh Vessel View. It seems to work rather good. I am just researching this so if I am wrong please let me know.
