Just discovered this, probably old news to most here but in case it's not...
On top of the Merc exhaust manifold near one end theres a small plug. The OEM, Sierra, and Barr castings have this feature. If you remove that plug, you have clear sight into the exhaust chamber. You can shine a light or stick an inspection camera in and easily see if you have water collecting where it shouldn't. With a semi-rigid camera you can get right up and inspect the gasket too. This is much easier than pulling the elbow, buying a new gasket etc. Makes an in-water inspection trivial.
