Anyone have an opinion on using OEM Merc parts versus Mallory or Sierra. Fuel filters, distributor caps & rotors etc are almost half the price versus Merc & quicksilver. In the past I always went Merc but wondering if I'm wasting money.

from my somewhat limited experience the non-mercruiser/quick silver parts i have used so far have worked well....i think as long as you use 'marine' parts from major manufacturers you should be OK...where you may get into trouble is trying to use similar 'automotive' parts in place of 'marine' parts....

I use Quicksilver and Mercury myself, Mike.

I will only use Quicksilver or Mercury parts.......there is nothing worse than doing a repair twice because you tried to save money!

I agree. If you use the right online resources, you should not see a whole lot of price difference between the off brand stuff and Merc/QS. All depends on the part I guess. I am more of an OEM parts guy for just about everything. I have just had too much trouble with off brand stuff in the past so I avoid it whenever possible. I do make a few exceptions depending on the situation.

I am trying Sierra cap rotor and wires this year
still sticking with Merc filters though

My independant boat shop uses Quicksilver and it makes me happy.. I am sure you could find other brands that are actually the vendoe for these parts but I have seen to many people have issues when using automotive parts on their boats..

I have used Sierra parts with no issue.

As a DIY (or is it DYI) I use marine parts when required such as electrical parts etc. Most everything else I go outside Merc/quicksilver as you can find the same or better quality without pay the super premium price.

After Market parts are all right for starters and altinators but for other one stick with merc they fit right and are made with proper rubber not old tires like some. Plugs use NKG dont ping . Props use Michigan better proformance and the money you are saving by not paying labor dont be so cheep.
