Boat Info
Sundancer 290. 2000. Twin 5.0 efi Mercruiser, B2 drives.
Engines
Mercruiser 5.0 Efi.
My starboard 5.0 EFI has decided not to start.
Had the boat 6 weeks and put just over 6 hours on the clocks as we slowly get to know her and the ‘new to us’ location on Lake Vättern here in Sweden.

Two weeks back went out and the starboard motor stalled after the low rev manouvering out of the Marina. Wouldn’t restart so returned to the dock on the port engine. Waited 10 minutes and restarted, ran for 15 mins all temps/pressure/amps normal on both engines. Bit windy so went home :)

Last week went for another reccé trip. Stbd engine reluctant to start but did so with half gas and maybe a pump or two. (I know that’s not in the efi starting procedure but old habits die hard). Anyway with both engines warm and all gauges good, slow steamed round to the pump out dock. Stopped, pumped out n both restarted straight away (warm). Cruise around the bays for 3 hours, no planing or WOT (it was a crappy day) but all good at +/- 2000/2500 rpm so under 10 knots. I record the gauges every hour on my boats...all steady, both ran smooth. Docked n went home.

This week returned to boat, port engine starts as normal, starboard ‘lump’ (Note, no longer my favorite engine!) cranks, half fires once then just cranks. Blowers on, wait 5 minutes, try again, same again. 3 attempts 30 second cranking, half fire then nothing. Tried gas/small pump, one fire then nothing.

Mechanic down yesterday, (not Mercruiser authorized and doesn’t know his injected gas engines.) he repeated my starting efforts and agreed it wouldnt start :). To be fair he did then remove the distributer cap, clean up the contacts and try again. Nothing. Says he can come back next week and spend the day on it but this seems like throwing money in the Lake. My local Mercruiser Authorized workshop is on holiday.....HELP! It’s a short summer here.
Yep, the gas tank is full.
Yep both engines worked fine last week. Port engine starts first turn.
Ambiant temp here is 15 to 20 deg C.

It’s been raining a lot So maybe some moisture getting in?
Where to start, shall I remove and check the fuel filter. Check n clean plugs.. basics first right? Going down today but thought I’d ask if anyone has any quick miracles I can perform. I’ve tried searching the threads here but find it hard to find 5.0 efi specific stuff so sorry if it’s up already, ( new user) just steer me to the thread.
Thanks in advance.

It sounds like it could be fuel related, fuel filter is probably the easiest/first task. Your mechanic could test the fuel pressure using the schrader valve on the fuel rail. The EFI fuel pumps tend to fail suddenly rather than a slow decline.

Do you know if you have the 2 fuel pump (Cool Fuel 2 + helper pump) arrangement? The helper pump is under the alternator near the spin off fuel filter, the CF2 is mounted near the bottom of the engine behind the engine mount. Merc started installing them from the factory about 2002 to address vapor lock issues (see TSB below). I ask because my main fuel pump in the CF2 is failing, but when it cuts out the helper is providing enough fuel to keep the engine running up to the mid 2,000's in RPMs.

Thanks. I don’t think I have the CF2 as the boat is from 2000 and was a standard (ish) equipment outfit. Not seen any documentation on an upgrade in the history but will check your points with the mech Monday or Tuesday. I didn’t take off the fuel filter today as I don’t have a new one to fit back. Thanks again for the info. (Bloody annoying this, first decent weekend for weeks coming up! Grr, :(

FIXED!
Checked fuel filter. Ok.
Checked distributer, cleaned and ok.
HT leads multi metered, all ok.
Coil multi metered, suspect, so swapped with port motor and stbd motor started immediately!
New coil on order.
Thanks. mark.
