i have a 1980 merc. 260 with pre alpha outdrive. when i bought the boat it would not properly shift, i could jam it in gear but most the time it made alittle grind. i adjusted the cable to the req. 6" from the hole to the barrel screw an it only made it worse. i could adjust the cable where it would go in forward easily or reverse but not both. talked to a guy at a marine shop an he said to replace the shift cable. so 140 dollars later its worse than before no i cannot get it into full forward or full reverse. it almost goes both ways but not completely. so did i install it wrong or miss something... it was pretty common sence install but maybe someone can shed some light.. much appreciated....MIKE
