Merc 5.8 Alpha I outdrive
Hello members,

The title of my thread pretty much tells my story. I was motoring into my slip this weekend for the first time and when I went to put her into reverse, the engine cut out. No problems starting in throttle only mode, and no issues going into gear as well as running in forward. She just quits going into reverse.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks!
Jeff

Sounds like a simple adjustment to the shift cable. See link>> http://www.mercstuff.com/images/shiftcable.jpg
Shifting to reverse will briefly "kill" the engine to remove the torque from the outdrive. A mis-adjusted cable to the shift interupter switch will just kill the engine.

Good luck

Hey, thanks for the link! I've been doing some reading and searching online and this is exactly what everything points to. However, I have read that unless the prop is under load it's hard to tell whether the fix is 100%. I wonder if that is why in your link instruction they indicate turning the prop backwards until it stops. This seems like an easy enough fix so I might try it while in the slip.
