Memorial Day Weekend

I'd love to, only if it was a bit closer. About 300NM round trip is just way too expensive for a long weekend.

We will be in Zachs for the weekend. Tradition and a great time!. We hung out in Zachs bay 2 weeks ago. Lots of shifting sand [same as every year] and no channel buoys in at that time. Looking forward to the show and the official start of the season.

We should be there and i'd like to stay over since we will have a liitle more room. Anyone staying?

Oh great...that's exactly what I need. Ron, do they put the buoys in place by the Memorial Day Weekend?

Joe, that's great news. I can't see the pics in the office (they're blocked), but I'll check later at home. I know how you feel about giving up the 320, we loved ours as well. But, as you said, on to another boating chapter. You going to really enjoy your new floating condo.

Do you guys want to start a new thread for Zach's? I'm thinking on going, but have to work on few things and see if can make it.

Start a thread, I'm going...

Awesome boat Joe, can't wait to see it. Congrats.

Russ im trying to get her moved to newport and i rented a car for saturday one way. The. Take the boat home. Trying to work it out still.

Joe, I can pick you up at one of the ferry ports or even come out to LI, not sure where you are if that would help. Or if you need a hand bringing her back you could pick me up. Where are you bringing her on the island? Let me know if you need my help.

I agree with Russ. Ferry is an excellent way to cut across. It'll save you tons of time. I took it when we were shopping for a boat in Newport and it was an excellent choice of transportation.

Guys the only thing with the ferry is there are three guys coming with me plus gear
I thought renting a car one way was easiest I've made it to Warwick in under three hours so that's not bad. My only probem right now is the salesman never told me I needed to contact a captain a month ago and get on his schedule. I assumed I would hire one of there guys on their day off so now I'm scrambling to find a guy to move her to Newport on or before Saturday. Otherwise I have to take the day off during the week. Agggggghhhh!!!!!

I'm a licensed captain. Go early Saturday, where is she -Boston? Cut through the canal and stop overnight in Mystic there is a transient slip next to mine. Then off to LI on Sunday or start on Friday afternoon? I'm sure you will figure it out, let me know if I can help.

Joe, I just did a quick distance calculation and it looks like you have two 100NM legs. Roughly, it's 100NM from Boston to Mystic and then about 100NM from Mystic to LI South Shore (FI inlet area). There's absolutely no reason to go crazy. You have couple of options, as Russ pointed out:

1. If the Ferry is more convenient and saves you time (I don't know where you'll start your way) take the first ferry on Sat morning and pick up Russ (if you need his help). Within 3hrs you should be on the boat. By the time you get all stuff ready you'll cast off around noon. 100NM is about 5-6hrs at the most (providing the weather is ok). As Russ suggested, stop at Mystic (if Russ came with you, that's where he gets off). Sunday morning you continue on from Mystic to LI SS. You'll have two options there, either go to open water around Montauk or cut through and be in more protected waters of Peconic Bays and head for Shinnecock Canal. I would head for Shinecock inlet to avoid hassle of dealing with Moriches. From there you're on the way to Fire Island inlet (if that's what's closer to you).

2. If you want to be on more conservative, go to the boat Friday after work. Drop off everything, get settled, plot the rout (if you still didn't). Depending how you guys like and the schedules, you can either pickup Russ on the way to the boat.

It's all doable and you don't need to deal with 3rd party.

Hope this helps a little.

Alex the problems are: 1 my dad wanted to go ,I don't think he'd be crazy about sleeping on the boat.
2: I'm supposed to bring my son and a buddy if my buddy can't make it overnight, I could go home with my son only.
I haven't operated the boat yet so I'm a little worried about finding lights, switches, etc while underway if I had a boating buddy with me i'd feel more comfortable that's all plus I had everything set up for Sat. Rental car, etc. I'm waiting to hear from Russo to find out what's going on. Keep you updated

Yeah, I understand Joe. You had one plan and now the 3rd party is stirring the pot. Here's my take on this, there's no magic and reality is that to make this trip comfortably (not too much rushing) you need to break it in to legs. I think this is how you planned it anyway but b/c of the 3rd party now you need to see if you can make both legs yourself. So, you have helping hands that have an issue to stay overnight. This is where a stop like Mystic becomes handy.

So, leg one. Regardless how you do it (option 1 or 2 from my earlier post), you have good helping hands for leg #1. You get to area like Mystic. BTW, if you won't use Russ's help, then you can switch Mystic with Orient Point or something in that area (pick whatever is convenient). Leg one is your true "get to know the boat" ride. By the end of the leg I'm positive that you'll be very comfortable with the boat. After 320 you'll feel like you're driving a very comfortable ship. You get to the desired destination of leg 1 and you unload everyone that can't stay overnight. BTW, if your dad doesn't feel comfortable slipping on the boat this can be easily fixed by paying $100 for a room. So anyway, let's say your buddy and your dad have left and it's you and your son.

Leg 2:
Sunday am you'll be rested and have much more comfort level and trust in your skills and of course the boat. You take off and I'd suggest to use open water (if conditions are ok). This is just to avoid extra hassle with the canal and zig-zagging on the ICW. Go around the Montauk (btw, Star Island can be used to fuel up and your port for the night or if you'll have enough you can get fuel at Sinneckock inlet). When you get to your place the only somewhat unfamiliar event on THIS boat is docking. But, I've seen you dock and I'm sure this is not going to be an issue. The only difference with this boat is the lack of good visibility compare to 320. You'll have a small (about 2'x2') opening on your port side, which is your best view. Since you'll have your son with you all he needs to do is to stand on the platform or cockpit and alert you on the distance from the finger or piling or bulkhead (however your slip is setup). Congratulations!!! You have arrived.

You can always call me regarding any questions.
