May need Minneapolis survey. What should be surveyed?

May need a survey in Minneapolis, MN. What all should I ask for. in a survey? How do I know if they are good? Any referrals?

I had a boat surveyed (at Lake of the Ozarks, MO) last August when I bought it. The bank wanted it. It gave me an appraisal of the price, checked the systems to make sure they were working and the boat was lifted out of the water and it was checked for any problems that you couldn't tell in the water. It was pretty thorough. If I ever pay cash for a boat, I will have it done for my own self satisfaction. For sure something could break the day you take possession, but at least you know at one time the systems worked.
 
I also just used Cliff Schmidt. He's thorough and has all the gadgets. Not cheap but did a pretty good job.
 
I can't recommend a local surveor for you but some things about the survey. Most will perform a structural survey only. They sound the hull to find if there are any areas of delamination. They will perfom a general check of all systems and electronics on the boat and assess whether they are functioning or not to the best of their abilities. In the winter they won't run the fresh water if winterized, they will note a visual and note that it must be confirmed. They will look for signs of leaks, address the stringers as best as they can see them as they run the length of the boat.

As for engines, outdrives, shafts, props, etc. They will do a visual and note any signs of concern.

I would recommend that you have a compression test performed on the engines, then if you want to be if more certain (depends on the $$ you are planning on spending on the boat) take an oil sample and send it out to be analyzed. I believe Black Stone Labs has been used by some on here with great results.

The Surveyor will also do a sea trial with you and the owner to check for shifting, op temps, then will/should be in the bilge while the owner operates to check the engine mounts and look for any signs of issues.

That's what I would expect. Other will certainly add more for sure!
