I've been told I'll recieve qualified answers here.

I've got a nice Standard Horizon hand held unit (floats i've been told haven't tested) but worked very well when we had the wave runner.

The current boat does not have a well protected shop outside for a installed unit but might could make something. I was very happy with the SH unit we had on the BayHole but that is sold so stay with the HH or go installed.

Then - Icom or SH? I see that BOE seems to support Icom more.

99.9% boating on freshwater river/lakes in TN.

Icom All the way. Built to military specs. Why mess around with your safety. I bought a HH for the ditch bag last year and just bought the m504A to replace my northstar. Great radios this will be my third ICoM

I have had Standard Horizon in all of my boats and love the clarity, range and quality. I am loyal to them.

I have a cobra hh,gotta say at 10 yrs old it works great,it is however confusing to use and i have to read the manual every time i use it .I would suggest checking the owners manual for operation procedures befor buying any vhf for emergency purposes.I am in the market to replace my flush mounted ray50 but havent picked one yet.

Most radios have a waterproof front and many also have a cover to snap over them when not in use, you can also buy flip up covers as an accesory to place over them when mounting into the dash. Radio signal on VHF is pretty much decribed as line of sight, so the higher the aerial the better, As such an isntalled unit with a good antenna will give you far better range.

And as previously stated throw th HH into the ditch bag as a backup.

I use both icom and standard horizon. Back in the late 70's to early 90's when cellular phones were not yet in service, we used amateur radios a lot and icom was the top brand then.

I would install a mobile base on the boat and keep the old hand held for ship to shore comms.

Dropped, and retrieved :), the SH HX 850 into the Great Salt Pond twice, on a trip to Block Isle last Labor Day.

Did you replace your North Star or what ever they call it with the icom?

Just finished replacing my Northstar NS100 with an Icom m504A (from BOE). Thanks Jim!!!!!
