Marine Grills... Do any work underway?

So if i hang the George Forman off the starboard side, where I can reach it from the helm, do I power it with the honda generator on the swim platform?
Come on. Everyone knows you can't run the Honda generator on the swim platform while under way, it might get wet. The Honda has to be tied to the radar arch if you are going to use it while under way.

Just when I was losing all faith in my support group, someone busts out the 'Honda on the Swim platform' to get us through winter.
Love you guys!

BTW: Jim was selling ones with rollers!? - Do you need to make a special bracket so they dont slide or do you just take the wheels off?

What I've decided to do is this...

I took my Honda 2000 generator and made a mount out of foam covered in fire block spray foam, then I ordered one of these. http://m.ebay.com/itm/142081477756?_mwBanner=1
And I installed it in the transom locker with this exhaust fitting out a rod holder. That way it's clean and doesn't get wet on the platform while we are under way.

I bought a heavy duty outdoor extension cord and ran it to this electric grill I got at Home Depot. ( I used 3m double sided tape so the grill stays put)

It should work like a champ! I'll post pictures soon but I'm sure it will be fine because all the guys on YouTube are doing it on the houseboat forums.

Really though... it's 20 miles of 8-10 knots down the ship channel for us to the gulf. Many times it's nice to get dinner on for the guests during this part of the trip. Obviously I am not grilling in 10ft rollers but we can agree to disagree on this one it doesn't hurt a thing, nor is it dangerous as we have no kids. I guess we may lose a burger but whatever. So basically I think the magma grill sucks, it has gaping holes all over it. I'll buy a Dickinson and let y'all know how it goes.

I can't figure out how to add a deck fuel fill for the generator in the transom locker, with all the foam it's too hard to get a gas can in there... maybe I can install it under my grill.

Good gosh guys. Do any of you actually use your boat for something other than a floating condo? What would a sailboat say we do?

Grilling while underway is no moe dangerous than working in the galley while underway provided you apply common sense.

Due to my location most of my longer trips start with an 8-10 hour "cruise" at 8kts in order to save fuel. These trips are usually between 10 and 16 days.

I'll tell you that crockpots work great but there are times when you just can't beat a grilled hamburger.

I don't know about YOUR galley, but mine doesn't have open flames nor anywhere near as many square inches of searingly hot stainless as my Magma grill. But I agree about applying common sense to find what works for each boat and crew.

A guy on our lake grills with charcoal practically 24/7, whether on the hook or under way: he installed a mount on the swim deck and welded a post to the underside of a Weber-style kettle grill. YMMV
(If anyone is wondering, it's a Bayliner with a Honda generator on the bow.)

not sure if you read the entire thread or not but the OP led us to originally believe he was going to use the grill while going 30 knots on the boat.....that is why most of us expressed 'concern'.....he later explained the situation a little better.....

grilling on calm waters at 'cocktail' speed would be much more acceptable to most if not all of us.....

The OP was pretty clear: "but it wont' come up to temp or cook evenly in winds above 10kts. It works amazing at the dock or at anchor, but I would like to have one that would work up to 30 knts..."

I thought it was a great question. Love k9medics's response to those that got derailed.

FWIW, it's a 50' boat with a 15' beam, it is probably pretty stable at the fast idle, 8-10 knot cruising conditions described. If the conditions are rough, he probably has the sense to rethink the initial dinner plan.

I have a Magma and it is tough to use on a wind day for sure. This forum is great, I now know there is an alternative to Magma, "Dickinson".

Quick story:

I have a pole mount for my Magma grill that is at the back of the hydraulic platform, under the ladder cover. Great, hidden, install location for at the dock, terrible for underway. Anyway, just a heads up, the magma pole mount basically came apart in my hands one day when setting up to grill for dinner. The pole mount has stainless screws that permanently screw into a nylon block that is bolted to
the bottom of the grill. I pushed the little button and set the grill on the pole and shortly thereafter the screws let loose. Automatic instinct was to catch it as it was falling. Fast reflexes and I caught it. Instant remorse as that thing could have fallen apart while cooking, been really hot and burned the crap out of my hand!

Regardless of cooking at dock or underway, the mounting assembly is only good as the weakest link. Make sure it's better than the crap i bought.

.

a 'wind of 30 knots' can be created in two ways....one way is naturally by God and the other is when the boat is traveling at 30 knots per hour....the title of the post and his question led us to assume he is wanting to grill while underway at 30 knots.....

I was one of the majority of responders that originally read the post as the OP wanting to grill while going 30 knots per hour.....i guess this is how our simple minds got 'derailed'.....glad you got a 'chuckle' out of k9medic's reply....

hi Cliff,

That's another reason this is such a great Forum. We have to be on point during our day job, not so much here. While other forums have predators ready to attack at the first opportunity, derailed here is just not a big deal and it happens to all of us. Plus it's mildly entertaining. Glad to learn your point of view on the wind as it's different than what I was thinking. I was thinking 10 knot cruise, 10 knot winds so to be able to work with a 30 knot wind seemed like a good target.
