I have been a fan of marinas.com for several years. Got all my favorites saved - great aerial photos of each marina from all possible vantage points. A really good tool when you are transienting somewhere you've never been to.

Today I got an email inviting me to participate in their "Marina Review" program. They allow you to rate each marina (up to 5 stars) and even provide a space for commentary. To be honest, I've got mixed emotions about this. I'm always wary of online reviews b/c it seems to me someone could really do some damage to a marina based on maybe one bad experience. So I picked a marina that I really liked and figured I'd be "the first to review." I gave it 4 stars and wrote some very favorable comments. Then clicked SEND. A box popped up stating my review will be posted after it is reviewed. Wondering if they'd edit it or take excerpts from it or just screen it for naughty language.

Bad news travels a lot faster and farther than good. I guess this could act as sort of a "suggestion box" for marinas but I wonder if it could really wind up hurting them if the only review provided is that from a disgruntled customer.

I second Marina.com. Great site. I just heard about the review program, but have not had a chance to check it out yet. Kind of reminded me of active captain.com

Ron,
Very valid point. Some lawyer guy posted all kinds crap about the marina im in. Wasnt even man enough to post his name. He went way over board and berated staff and there family.

This should be interesting. Almost every marina I have ever been in was not as good as the one just down the river....Those marinas always had better mechanics, better management, better customer service, better...whatever, but my marina always had one thing.... "the people I boat with".... that always kept me coming back. Funny, when you talked to someone from that "other marina". they said exactly the same thing...."you guys have better mechanics, better management...etc. etc.. Go figure...no one is ever happy !

The grass is always seems greener across the water. My guess is that this type of forum will serve those that are typical malcontents (no names but I could have lots of fun here) and trouble makers and will not represent a valid or objective critique of the marina in question.

Just my $.02.

I hope not, I always tried to update the info I know on activecaptain.com. Just thought if I could help somebody with good info, maybe it would come back in kind??

Ye, I know good guys finish last, but at least it is nice to have some good karma:huh: It can't hurt.

I agree with Chuck on this one. I've always posted positive experiences on activecaptain.com. I figure that in this economy, positive press not only helps somebody with good info, but can also help out the marinas with some good press.

Of course, I'm not going to post negative experiences if they're applicable.

Mike

Oops, I realize I just made a typo.

I meant to say "I'm not going to hesitate about posting a negative experience if it's applicable."

Wow....you even got them to paint a big red arrow in the parking lot so you won't forget which slip is yours.....nice!!!!

It's actually a RED CARPET they laid out for me. I'm told you can see it from space.

I just posted a review for "Palm Island" marina on Fl's West Coast. We really loved that place.

Good site for information. I was checking a couple marinas in the Charleston area I visit. The pictures they have posted of these are very outdated, look nothing like what is there now after some changes were made. Checking Mapquest for "Bird's eye" view is a great tool and seem current as well.

I've added posts for:
Scipio Creek, Apalachicola
Port St Joe (same)
Baytowne (San Destin)
Harbour Docks (Destin Harbour)
Bay Point (Panama City Beach)

None gave bad service, but some are better than others.
