Hi guys,

I have showered the internet and can’t seem to find much info on the sundancer 60 or 610’s running the MAN V10’s 1100 hp. We have a survey coming up next week and would like to know if anyone has had experience with MAN’s. I work for Caterpillar and love our engines and as well has Cummins in my previous boat and trucks. Love Cummins. But have no experience with MAN’s. I did read one post with someone commenting on how the V10’s have a feature that shuts off 5 cylinders when under 1200 rpm, for fuel saving features. He stated to stay away from them.

would like to hear more and your thoughts from those that have owned or can provide comments on these engines. This vessel is a 2008.

TIA
Amir

Hello
I have Man 800s in a 55 Sea Ray and although won’t be much help with your inquiry you may want to try BoatDiesel.com. If that doesn’t work PM me I can put you in touch with some dealers based on your area. Good luck.

I’ve run several SR 60/610DA’s and they are great boats, built like tanks. All the 610’s had 1100 hp MAN engines. They are quiet, silky smooth at all speeds and bullet proof. The only knock on the MAN common rail engines is that you need to treat them like a Mercedes and work on and maintain them like MAN recommends which can be expensive because some scheduled service is pretty involved.

Also this is a completely different engine than the previous v-10 that shuts off 5 cylinders at low rpm settings. They are good engines but will shake, rattle and smoke when running on 5 cylinders. The 1100 hp engines do not.

Thank you so much. That was very helpful. These things make me nervous since I haven’t seen much input on them online or comments. Glad to hear they aren’t as evil as I would have suspected. I’ll keep digging into it.

Much appreciated captain.

A

We met someone with MAN big engines in a 52 foot Viking. He like them but had problems with one on his way to Alaska. No place in the area could work on it. He ended up flying in a MAN mechanic and then the parts. He liked the engines. His comment was make sure you get the full service manual with them. Not for you but for the people that will work on the engine.

Sea Ray made 2 Sundancers that were always very highly reguarded by owners. Both were available with the 1100 hp MAN's and I loved both of them. The other one is the 58DA, so don't overlook that on as you consoider larger boats.

You won't find many negative comments about either. I would, however, expect any negative comments to generate from the arm chair captains a with no experience other than hearing gossip around the dock where people tell stories about how expensive MAN service is. If you get into it you will find that MAN requires a partial tear down pretty early to examine cylinder wear patterns, but ask how many owners WITH MAN 1100'S have ever failed to get home after a day, week or month on the water. They are very much like big Caterpillars.....bullet proof and very dependable.

Good to know. Yeah I was actually looking for the manuals online. I tend to do a lot of my own work, however I am sure I’ll be limited on what I can take on from engine maintenance outside of the fluids change and filters. Removing heat exchangers and turbos not a problem. It’s the diagnostics and valve lash checks that will require additional support. Luckily being in Kemah, Texas we have performance diesel local so that will help. Also have a few buddies of mine who left Cat to work for MAN corporate side. So that will possibly help. But good to know. Thanks for your insight sir.

Performance diesel is the distributor for the 2 Sea Ray factories that installed MAN's boats so they will have warranty claim records if there were any.
You didn't give us your location previouslyt, reas where so I didn't comment on service availability, but MAN service can be spotty in some areas. Parts pose a similar issue so get in the habbit of carrying any spares you might need because you are likely to find any support in areas where MAN isn't popular.
