Hello everyone, Im just wondering if anyone here has gone to the Macys fireworks by boat from your home port and overnighted in Manhatten somewhere. I am thinking about over nighting at the Marine Max in Chelsea Piers,

Anyone do this? any pointers?

Thank you,

Rich

Take a lot of Bonine and give extra to the crew when staying that marina. Liberty Landing Marina is preferred choice for me. But, also check out new Marina that just opened in BK, across from downtown Manhattan.

Better get a hotel room for the Mrs in the city somewhere and just leave your boat tied up there.. You will thank me later...

We went in there for lunch last sept and although the location is perfect, I couldn't sit on my boat tied up for more than about 5 mins without feeling woozie..

I'd pick a different spot.. Like Alex suggested.. Liberty landing in jersey..

IGY took over South Cove Marina in the financial district.. Never been there.. Might be the same as Marine Max but it looks like they have a wall..

Sounds like a nice evening watching the show from the water though..

The new marina in Brooklyn looked very calm ( large break wall) but it was empty as Andrew pointed out about Memorial Day.

If I remember the website of the new marina in Brooklyn correctly, they have a one week required stay for the July 4th holiday! And the prices for dockage is not cheap.

So lots of rocking at the dock.. My friend has a slip at Liberty Landing Ill ask him about transient docking. I will look into Brooklyn but that means going around lower Manhatten ..
dunno if I want to navigate that at night.

Liberty Marina is the only marina with any depth that is calm at night on the Hudson Side. They also have nice amenities, restaurants, fuel, pump out and ferries to NYC. If you haven't watched the fireworks by boat before, be aware that its a madhouse. Tons of boats in a small area with no anchoring permitted by the coast guard. Add to that strong currents and loss of night vision from the fireworks display itself and things can get a little hairy. Not to mention that the second the fireworks are over, the mad dash out of there is unreal. I dock further up the Hudson just south of the GW bridge and last year the wakes from exiting boats were so extreme it threw a 30' boat up onto the dock. I now take the boat to long island for that weekend. Much calmer and fireworks available in every direction. If you go, just be careful and stay alert.

North Cove Marina is just a little better than Chelsea Piers. Even with break wall you get rocked there pretty good. The boat traffic will wake you up around 5:30am. It's in awesome location, but as mentioned above, be prepared to pay $6-$7 p/f for 3 nights minimum for the holiday weekend.

In terms of safety, you better have good night navigation skills as you're looking to cruise in the one if the busiest harbor of US, and you'll have to share these waters with many people that take their boat out only 3 times year....HINT.....HINT....expect to share "the road" with people who's rule is "I go first".
:wow: :smt101

Of course this doesn't mean you have to stay at the dock. We just giving you some pointers of what's out there. You know your level of expertise, so decide what's best and safest approach.

P.S.
LLM has also very nice waterfront park where you'll have prime view of the city and fireworks.

So then, Lake George it is!.. Sounds like more trouble than its worth.. I grounded "Luna Sea" yesterday when my girl and I exited the channel and and buried my props in muck.Luckily there was a strong current and we slowly drifted off after I asked her to get up on the bow and I trimmed up the drives..But that just shows the newbie level of my skills, although I was raised on boats just not on tidal waters. So I will give it some thought but probably sit this one out and just enjoy my 85 Baja I just restored on good ol Lake George. Thanks for the input!!
