Can the lower gear case be removed with the upper gear case left on the boat? I want to change the water pump and would like to just pull the lower gear case if possible. Thanks George

In a word, NO. The shift cable would be a problem if left attached inside the boat. Also, you really need to take the upper unit apart carefully or you will have parts falling out. Its not really a bad job to pull the OD and reinstall. I think it will be faster and easier if you pull the whole thing.

Thanks for the input, I ordered the parts today and decided to replace the ball gears as well. They show a little wear maybe 1/8 to 3/32 I don’t know how much is ok but thought I may as well do it while I have it apart. George:thumbsup:

Be sure to use some Permatex Ultra Black silicone around the nuts holding the ball gears onto the splines. Those welsh plugs are known to leak and if unsealed, will allow water to enter the upper gear case and to flow along the splines and in to the boat on the other end.
