Low RPM

It kinda sounds like your breaker plate is grounding when the advance starts to come in. If you swap the distributors between the two, the problem should move to the other engine.

That was going to be our next attempt, but it started raining, and I had pulled out from under the slip for better light. I was going to order a new electronic module for the distributor, but then I realized I could just order a mechanical advance, electronic distributor for 319$ and hopefully be done. The dist is scheduled to be here Saturday, I shoud get back to the boat to put it in early next week. I am really hoping to get this thing running right by Labor Day weekend!!

I'm getting really tired of throwing $ at this thing! Put a brand new Mallory distributor in this thing yesterday, set the timing right. swapped my fuel pickup lines with the port enging to rule out clogged pickup tube. Getting good power to new fuel pump. Engine starts first turn, runs super all the way up to 5600 rpm in neutral. Under a load, it still won't get over 3400 rpm. The other engine still runs up to 4500 rpm under load. I even checked temps at the exhaust Y pipe to rule out the flapper breaking off in the foot, both sides are 138 degrees on both engines. Last month I swapped props with the port engine & no change (not counter-rotating outdrives)
What else can I check? Compression was good when I bought the boat & had a survey done.
 
A friend of mine is fighting a similar issue with a single 260 V8. I'll tell you what I told him, do a compression check and see if the problem is internal.
I had an engine with good numbers one year and a dead bank the next so it does happen.
At least the test is free and will tell you alot about the internals of your engine.
 
A compression test and a cylinder leakdown test wouldn't be a bad idea. Are you sure there isn't something wrong in the outdrive?

Gonna try that this week. Also going to remove the exhaust boots & look down the Y pipe & make sure the exhaust flapper hasn't broken off & wedged in the foot. I really don't want to remove the outdrive, only as a last resort. Thanks for the help
