Any suggestions?

Sync started fluctuating a little, now stbd engine won't go over 3400 RPMs. Got close to dock and had some loud knocking when only when in gear on that side. Once at dock, noticed burning smell in cabin. Shut down motors for a while, then had trouble starting that side. Once started with a little throttle, belt squealed for a second and smoked (as if a pulley was sticking). Let it cool for a while, then started it again. Now seems to run fine at the dock and shift ok. Haven't put it under load again yet.

Oil pressure and temp guages are fine.

a first easy check would be to pull the belt(s) off and make sure all the pulleys turn freely. i can't imagine a belt driven accessory could bog and engine down on rpm but it could be your burning smell (rubber smell?). can you find any signs of anything being hot (burning) in the bilge? the hard starting and noise things seem kinda scary. check the simple stuff like belt driven accessories first then dig deeper. you mention it only made noise in gear. whats the condition of the trans oil like?

In my book; step one with any abnormal engine noise is to pull the oil filter, cut open and inspect. You need to know first off if something is coming apart internally. Do this on both engines as so you can have a reference point. I wouldn’t run either engine until I knew how the internals were doing!

Was it the water pump belt that sliped/smoked?

Thanks for the replies. I plan on checking the pulleys tomorrow. The voltage seemed a little low on that side too so it might be an issue with that one. Will check the tranny fluid also and oil filter also. Thanks again.
