Loud Transmission Knocking Noise

the owner deemed the knocking noise normal
Ok, Dats funny. What a Knothead that seller is. The bad compression is clear indication the engine has given up the ghost. How will he sell? Well, here is a scenario I ran into with my last sell. I was selling a 2002 Rinker 342 here in the Northwest in mid 2020 (recall, right at the start of the Pandemic the craziness in the market?). I would say 1/2 the prospective buyers were new to boating and had no clue. What they had was money to burn. Because they had no clue but lots of money (and I mean no knowledge of surveying or even insurance or mechanicals) and, boats were being bought out from under them, 80% were throwing money down with no requirements (they think its like buying a car I suppose, not a big deal to repair). In my case, I had put two new Bravo IIIs on to sell but that didnt really make an impact to the buyer (wish I hadnt in hindsight because most buyers werent aware of the value of that). Add to that, the craziness drew in some rather questionable surveyors, and its not hard to understand any of the craziness. In my case, the buyer was a 30-something at facebook (ie lots of money on hand). Had an idea about mechanics but certainly was not adept at understanding various systems. They were lucky with me as I had everything in good condition for them. I suppose that craziness continued through 2021 and is just now starting to slow down. I am kinda looking forward to maybe getting a good deal on a larger DA that one of these neophytes wants to unload because of the "Boy, I didnt understand what the management and costs were to own a boat, I cant wait to sell".

G'day all, I am looking at purchasing a 2001 Sea Ray 340 Sundance. Today while we were doing a pre purchase mechanical inspection we noticed a loud knocking sound coming from the port side gearbox. It only does it on the port and not stbd and it's pretty loud as you can hear in the video.
What do you guys think is the issue? The same port engine has also a compression issue. When the mechanics performed the compression test the lowest reading on 2 cylinders was around 105 psi and the highest on the other 6 cylinders was around 185/190 psi.
Would you guys run away or get the costs deducted?

During the sea trial, have the owner run the boat at WOT for 2-3 minutes and see what happens.

had very similar issue over the summer; spark plug wire had popped off on the port side engine. caused a horrible knock in the gear box while in gear and idling through no wake. thought the trans was shot. popped the plug wire back on, noise gone. coincides with the mis-fire video posted earlier.

I don't know how the market is in your neck of the woods, but here in the US I have had two boats sold out from under me because I wanted a survey and sea trial. Other buyers did not. Go figure.

It’s a hot market here. I recently sold my boat in the same place as Stylish Imports was buying.

Sold it in 15 minutes and no haggling on the price. Didn’t even get a chance to list it with a broker or advertise online.

Inspection one day, received the funds the next, cleared out the boat the day after and handover the following.

Things will definitely slow down now with the boarders opening back up in WA and the winter approaching. I’m always of the opinion that missing out on a bad deal like this is only a good thing. I’m prepared to have a money pit boat and let the owner sell it for way more than what it’s worth just because boats are selling fast.

The owner of the boat maybe thought I was going to pay $120k plus spending $30k to fix it hahah. He must have been dreaming. The same boat will be worth $80k soon.

Contract has been cancelled, the owner deemed the knocking noise normal and he wasn’t willing to rectify or deduct the cost of the compression issue. I honestly don’t understand how he expects anyone to buy it, especially when he is asking over AU$120k +.

I have almost the same exact issue, 2 cylinders lower compression, knocking noise just started. Ive been told by 3 mechanincs it is normal on the port side, the starboard spins the opposite direction so it doesnt make the sound. My knocking is a little different than yours but I def dont like it. Did you buy a boat?
