Cruising at 1150 RPM lost all thrust on the port side. Engine appeared to be fine, temps, pressures ok. System made no abnormal sounds it literately felt like a prop fell off. Limped home on starboard side engine. Left Port side motor run to keep shaft seals cooled on port side.

Took a look in the engine room when we got back to our marina. The shaft on the port side appears to have slid back about 2 inches and had a bit of black plastic shavings below.

Any ideas?

Upon further investigation. There is nothing that appears to spin when the transmission is shifted forward or backwards.

Could this be a failure of the solenoids for the shifter to the transmission?

Zach, IMO it sounds like a torsional coupler. Same symptoms/problem on my boat, $7000 later and it was fixed. Two men 5 hours plus parts, they slid the Trans forward and were able to change without pulling anything. You can manually put your Trans into forward or reverse if you want to eliminate the solenoid. Put your Trans into forward gear, if the shaft turns it's your solenoid. If not, it's the vulcanized torsional coupler in between the fly wheel and Trans. Also, a telltale sign it's the coupler is the vulcanized pieces falling into the bilge that come out of the bell housing vent holes. I hope I'm wrong, get a good Trans tech who only works on transmissions you'll have less headache.

Good luck with this, Bow Tie
