Lost a hull window today

JV II, .... this look familiar? DSC_0407 (Large).jpg 30 miles from Bimini last summer in our 2005 48 Sundancer - pop goes the window. A 2008 48 on our trip also lost a hull window - at least in the case of these two 48s the ultimate problem was that they installed incorrectly and if memory serves eventually even recalled by the window manufacturer (don't quote me on that though).

As an update, the window is fixed today with the help of Rusty Higgins, Sea Ray and the window manufacturer. I have full confidence in the repair. Rusty, you are the best! I am so pleased by the immediate attention and service. Brunswick and Sea Ray is no small shop and you would never expect to get this kind of attention, but I have to say that when you buy a Sea Ray, you get the same kind of attention as you would expect from American boutique boat builders like MJM and Sabre. I was always a big fan of Sea Ray, having bought three of them over 5 years. They always exceed my expectations. Any premium you pay for a Sea Ray is well worth it!

Great to hear Sea Ray took care of the problem. Did they determine what caused the failure? Are there any telltale signs to look for?

I'm not positive as they did not indicate what caused the failure. I highly doubt hull flexing as the seas were only 4-6 at it's not like I was jumping over them. I was in the trough and taking it on the beam. The stainless window ring is heavy gauge and would not flex in those seas. Adhesive? No tell tale signs. I would say that with any fixed hull window, it would be a good idea to press on them as part of your routine annual inspection to see if there is any play.

It is well worth noting, that once again, Captain Rusty is front and center making things happen for Sea Ray customers. If Rusty ever donates blood at the Red Cross, they are going to find his blood type is Type Sea Ray.

I would love to pick Rusty's brain for 10 minutes - Thinking he could offer a unique perspective.

I'm glad to hear that your problem is resolved and in such quick fashion too!

I am not surprised however, to hear that Capt. Rusty was so instrumental in this quick resolution. From all reports he is truly a stand up guy of the highest integrity.

JV II,

I drive these boats all over the place and have not had one window fall out. Can you please provide me with a HIN for this boat (via PM if you desire) and your SR dealer's location. I do know most service managers across the country and would be way interested in what they find....and of course will send to everyone in our group too.

I know your boat model and would like to share your findings with our supplier as well for their review.

Standing by,

Rusty

Just happened to me. 2006 48 DA. Port forward salon window went swimming in the Gulf while underway. Marine Max wants $1500 to repair!!!! Any suggestions? Hull #SERP6884C606

Tony - yours makes the fourth 48 I know of that has lost a forward salon window while underway. Clearly there was a real problem here. I remember being told they went to a new design (I believe sometime in 2008) to resolve this issue. I'd suggest you contact Sea Ray ....

Thanks, Jason - will do. By the way, a local mechanic told me he watched as a Meridian was lifted out of the water and a hull window popped out. He asked if the forward salon window was near where the slings line up on the 48 DA. Guess what? Directly above the missing window is a little decal..... "sling". Maybe the hull flexing during haul-out caused the adhesive to loosen.

I read about this and a 480 that I was considering last year had a temporary repair for a blown out window. As I recall one of the pieces of advice was to avoid placing the fenders by the windows when the boat is docked, because the boat puts pressure on the windows especially if it is sloppy or windy at the dock.
