I am going to sea trial a 08 240SD with 5.0MPI. Is there anything I should look for, other than the obvious.
Didn't know if there were any inherent problems with this setup.
Thanks in advance for your feedback:smt100

Personally I wouldn't buy that boat with the 5.0 engine. Find one with the 350 Mag.

I have a 2004 220 SD (same size as the 240 SD in 2008). The 5.0 does just fine unless you are trying to pull a large skier with a full boat.

+1. 1,000% agree.

+2.... I agree 2,000%. I had a 2008 240SD with the 350 MAG and it was a great setup for that boat. Can't imagine anything less.

The 5.0 in the 220SD is good but not enough for the 240SD.

I had a 2003 and 2004 240 Sundeck both for 3 years and a 2010 260 Sundeck. All 3 boats had the 350MAG and Bravo 3. I would highly recommend the 350MAG over the stock 5.0. It's faster, stronger and just an all around great package for that boat. Everything else about the boat was perfect there was no inherent design or ergonomic issues. Engine access was great, access to electrical and helm instruments was easy. You just cant go wrong with that boat
They did improve on the design in 2009 with the rear facing swim platform seat and the little tweaks they did with the the rest of the layout.....so take a look at the 2009 260 as well if your looking at the 2008. Good luck!

The 5.0 ruins one of the best boats ever made. The 2008 had the magic DTS system. You will hate the lack of power, and will find it tough to get rid of it. There is probably a power plant-related reason that the boat is for sale, regardless of what is claimed.
A luxury boat has certain expectations of available power. Bentley wouldn't sell many cars if they offered a 4 cylinder.

Good point about the resale value of the 5.0.

I've had an 04 with a 383 Stroker and also an 04 with the 5.0. Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference although the 383 Stroker had the stock props and could have probably been tweaked a bit. We usually go out with a full boat and if I had to run the 5.0 a little harder it was no big deal.

I keep my boats pretty damn clean and as far as resale goes both of my boats sold to the first person that looked at the boat for full asking price. And....asking price was about $3,000 more than what I bought the boats for.

if it is seawater cooled pull the plugs and check for water in cylinders. To me a seawater cooled SMBC is only good for 8 years before it needs new heads and manifolds.

I have a 2003 240 Sundeck 5.0 MPI with over 1000 hours and I never have wished for more power.

We often have 6 to 8 on boat and pull slalom skiers.

If you have never felt the correct engines power, the 350 or 6.2, then you can get used to the anemic 5.0.
Are you pulling slalom skiers? That's the test. The 5.0 is geared and propped down to deliver the bare minimum, and it will pull easier things like a tube or wakeboard easily. But, the right power plant increase the enjoyment. I boat in a sundeck with a 496 mag. That is about right for my tastes.

Remember they changed the boat numbering in 2008. So a 2004 220 is the same size as a 2008 240. They started counting the 2 foot swim platform in the boat "size" in 2008.

Well said.

I have a 2008 240 and the LOA is 26'. I believe they started counting the swim platform in 2009.
Before I purchased my boat I did a sea trial on both the 305 and 350 and I feel that the 305 is under powered for that boat.

2009 was the change. Sea Ray took their best selling big sundeck and made it almost 2 feet shorter. It seems like they felt like they were giving us too much boat for the money.
I spent some time on a 2004 220SD with the 6.2. Now that was beast!

Correct... the change occurred in 2009. The 240SD was the same from 2001-2008 and had an LOA of 26' including the swim platform.

I wouldn't want any more boat than my 220sd without more power. It's adequate. Of course I have an Alpha 1, I'm sure a bravo drive would make enough difference because the hole shot pulling a skier is the only time I wish I had a little more 'get up and go.'

The 220 is only about 300 pounds less than the 240.
The Bravo 3 has a lot less prop slippage coming out of the hole. I compare it to four wheel drive.
