Looking for advice. I'm interested in purchasing an '03 Sundeck 220 that needs a repower. Obviously can't sea trial. Any common issues to look out for on these? Assuming the rest of the boat is ok, what's a fair price to pay?

I haven't seen it yet. Don't know the hours. Seller states he has service records.

They are terrific boats, if you decide to proceed and can get it running. You can see why service records have limited value, because they don't tell you what wasn't done.

Have one and love it. Check for spiderweb cracking in the gelcoat around stress risers like Bimini mounts and windshield. Common in all boats but just make sure they're not too big or deep. Honestly, not much to really check out on them.

if you're interested in putting trim or smart tabs on it...you basically can't. The way the transom is shaped prevents them from mounting without some fab work. Boat planes well but can take a little bit of time if you're loaded heavy in the stern.

The peanut clusters switches as you know can be an issue so...see if they are all working and if not plan accordingly.

Around the Midwest a 2003 220SD in great shape with a great trailer with low <300 hours, $26K.

How much watersports do you plan to do and how many people would you typically have with you and, excuse the forwardness... but it does matter... are they of the extra large type?

What drive does it have?

Not too much waterworks, just some on occasion. Usually just me and the wife, but sometimes 2-6 addition people. Some large (not extra large, lol) some not. It has an Alpha 1.
Main benefit is that it has a head, which our current boat is lacking.

OK, thanks. It's a really good, solid boat - but the one thing that hurts it is the seating plan - great for seating, not so much for "quick hole shot" when it's just an Alpha. The seating plan's wonderful design actually hurts performance because it sort of forces people to sit in the back of the boat. Now, you can get around that by having people move up front.

Don't get me wrong - it's not "bad" - but if watersports or more spirited running was what you are after, there are other boats to look at. For example, the larger 240SD compared to the 220SD (both with the same engine and Bravo III drive)... the larger 240SD actually does better! It's got the same basic seating plan, but there's just something about that 240SD that "just works".

Well, I already bought the 220 because price was right. I'll get it running and see how it is. A 240 would be nice, though.
