I am looking for ways to put Internet accessible cameras and an alarm system on my boat. Ideas?

I am ready to put a WiFi router on the boat with a cell phone line if required.

As far as alarm goes I would look into sirenmarine.com . I don't have one but have heard good things. Has door contractors, bilge alarms, battery voltage levels, AC power, can be called up with your phone and will track location of device etc etc. They don't currently have a camera option but I have heard on THT that they were working on it. Have no idea if that is true but maybe call them. I am sure others will have other options as well.

John,

I have looked at Boat Nanny, but not installed yet. I will soon have WiFi at my marina, and will do something then.

Also consider the Drop Cam. I have one at my home, and it works well. You can record to an offsite location for a minimal coast, and retain it for as long as you choose. You get an alert email when it detects motion or loud noise, and you can disable it when not needed. It is for indoor use as of now. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

might want to look into 'cloud' based cameras....i think they are fairly new...

from the internet:

These cameras offer more flexibility than do regular webcams because they typically use a Web portal, rather than a laptop or personal computer, as the monitoring and control hub, allowing you to check in from anywhere -- including your smartphone.

I have had excellent success with Dropcams in certain applications including on-board but be aware of their high data usage if you plan to use it other than with wifi or an unlimited data plan. There's been a hearty discussion in Dropcam's comments section on Amazon. At the time I bought my first one people were quoting 60 gig/month if used continuously in HD.

Here's a sample clip. Notice the dude walking through at about :29

I've heard good things about the boat nanny. A former dockmate installed it on each of his last two boats. I was trying to find information on it just yesterday and struck out. It seems that their website is down. Hmmm, that's not good.

Does anyone know of a wifi or wired router that you can pop a data sim in for Internet connectivity, and then connect said cameras?

John,

Our 280 was broken into last season. I've looked at siren, who gets high marks from our local electronics supplier. I also looked at a system that is sold by a scandavian company. I forget the name but it's a play on ixxxx. Both of these are based on cellular transmissions. Their hardware is keyed to a monthly monitoring service. The service can shut off for periods when the boat is in storage. Cost is about $1000 with sensors. Both are wired systems. The Siren system gets high marks from my electronics guy because he rarely has to install them. It is pretty DIY.

The system I was really impressed with though is made by a company named GOST. It is modular, also cell based, but all of the sensors are wireless. This may be more of what you want.

Since our boat is tied up behind the house, I really just need blinding strobe lights and a horn that will cause bleeding from the ears. Haven't found that yet.

I use Simplisafe.com. ~$300 for: base, keypad, keychain remote, hatch trigger for ER, cabin door trigger, temp sensor for ER, water sensor for bilge, and motion sensor for cockpit. Another $25 a month for interactive monitoring with iPhone app where you can arm and disarm, check all alerts and get temp reading. You get email and text message alerts for all sensors and power outages. Everything installs wirelessly in under 20 minutes with double sided tape. Lithium batteries need to be replaced every 5 years. They are reportedly working on a video module to add to the system. Highly recommended.

I've looked into SimpliSafe as well. It's the best bang for the buck. A slip neighbor has siren, but mainly uses it for shore power monitoring and to remotely turn on his a/c.

JV 11, does the simplisafe system require a wifi connection ? Nick
