My boat almost sunk a week ago due to a leaking swivel shaft seal, no shore power and an idiot that put the portable charger on the wrong battery. Yes ........... I was the idiot ... lol. But thats another story.

I caught it pretty early but the water did get up to the bottom of the manifolds. The starter and trim pump were the only things under water that could be hurt i believe.

Should i replace the starter, pull it off and flush with WD-40 or something else or will it dry out on its own and be ok as is?? Or are they sealed good enough where water cant get in it?? Im in a tributary off the chesapeak bay and the salt content isnt to high where im at.

Im assumming the trim pump oil definately needs to be drained since it has a vent cap to let air in. Is there anything else i should do to the trim pump??

Thanks

yes i would pull the starter and make sure it's dry
i would all so make sure you didnt get andy water in the motor(yes it should be sealed and shouldnt take water that low,but a slight leak any where and.......)an oil change is cheap insurance.
is there any way it got high enough to run in to your transom and get water in to your gimble bearing? that would be worth checking all so and i think you can grease your coupler drive splines at the same time on that B II
sounds like your on top of it

Thanks

The gimbal ring is coming off soon to repair a swivel shaft seal leak.

The oil change is due anyway.

I actually just read that you can take the starter off and bake it in the oven at low temp to dry it out. :wow: Then spray the internals with CRC.

The starter won't last even if you bake it. Assuming you are in salt water, you can completely dissassemble the starter and clean and lubricate it to remove the salt, but the safest approach is to buy a new starter and carry it along with you since you won't get any notice when the weet one fails.

I"m not sure about the trim pump, bit if it isn't a sealed motor and pump, it will most likely fail at some point as well.

Being in a slip.
You might consider a good battery charger that's hard wired into the boat for shorepower use.

Check out the Charles SP 2000
It is also a DC power source when plugged in.
20AMPS DC power on my unit.

I have a safe spot on the bow for a Portable Genny.
High off the water and access thru a forward hatch.
A little 1k Genny would be running less then 1/2 the rated Amps to keep the charger running while at sea.

All that stuff that got wet. Maybe spray out with WD 40 Displaces moisture. Then follow up with Elec parts cleaner.
Because the WD 40 Attracts dirt.
But maybe the thin oil film is a good thing:huh:

Go over the starter really good. Ive heard with them being low in the bilge. They have a tendency to rust up. And thats without almost sinking the boat.

Good luck

By the fact that you are considering to re-use the starter, I'm going to guess that you will try anything to avoid not buying a new starter.

At the minimum, see if they sell a full rebuild kit for the starter and rebuild it. If they don't sell one, this is an indication that it's not serviceable. Just keep in mind the risks you are going to have if you can't restart your engine out on the water.

Either way, I'm guessing you have more damage than just the starter and trim pump. Keep in mind that while the water was only up to the bottom of the manifold, that the water would have been sloshing around and probably got higher than that.

More than likely i will replace the starter, especially if its as hard to take off as i think it will be.

$200 is pretty cheap for the piece of mind.

The trim pump is actually my main concearn.
