hello everyone

We're new to sea Ray type boats but not boating. We've sailed for 30 years and also have owned a center console for the past 5 years. Looking to get something a bit more comfortable for Lake Erie - primarily day trips to the islands but also an occasional overnight. One boat that caught our eye Is a 07 amberjack 270. Is there anything I should be aware of with this year and model? Ride quality, mechanical issues, etc. should we decide to move forward we would have a survey. Don't want to go that far (survey etc) if there are some inherent problems.

Anyone?

Great boat. We use ours as you described: primarily a day boat with occasional overnights. 11 years of ownership and no plans to change. We have the rare optional seating layout with back-to-back seating on both sides.

I've found that overall the boat is solidly designed and built. Other than fairly normal mechanical maintenance I've had few issues. Nothing unique to this model, just regular maintenance applicable to any boat. My biggest complaint is that Sea Ray did a lousy job sealing the hull to deck joint, but again I suspect it's not limited to Amberjacks. See my thread on how I resealed mine this past spring: http://www.clubsearay.com/index.php?threads/resealing-the-hull-to-deck-joint.83083/#post-938574

The ride can be a bit quirky until you figure out the trim. Then it's very good. Some info about the ride here:

In 2006 (my year) three engines were offered: 350 MAG MPI for 300 HP, (std), MX 6.2 MPI for 320 HP, and the 496 MAG for 375 HP. For 2007 they (wisely) dropped the 350 MAG and the MX 6.2 became the standard. All else being equal I would pick the 496 MAG. I have the 350 MAG and while it does OK, I have a lot of "toys" on my boat and the engine can struggle a lot when the bottom gets dirty. The larger engine option would have been better with minimal hit on fuel consumption.

2007 also saw the introduction of 2 cabin layouts: a mid-berth was an option. They standard layout used this space as a ginormous storage space under the helm deck. It holds a very impressive amount of stuff.

Happy to answer other questions you have.

After a 6 month search of the ideal day cruiser/fishing boat, we picked up a 2007 270 Amberjack in early August. It is equipped with the fishing package which is perfect for our application. Wife and I have spent several nights on the boat already and have enjoyed the fishing and the "intimate" sleeping quarters. Reminds us of sleeping in a 2 man tent atop Mount Whitney. With 100 hours on the clock, we have had no mechanical issues.

Enjoy! Just saw your post. I love my 270 AJ. You get the best of both worlds! Fishing and cruising! Any questions feel free to PM me! Have fun!

Go up to the 290. The extra 2 ft beam and still trailer-able is worth all of it. I have an 06 and love it.
