I'm looking to replace my XMD1 head with a newer version XMD3. I'm wanting to keep the Changer and Remote and gain the rear input jacks for an iPod and/or Sirius.. These units are out of production (by several years) but if I can find a good used unit I can just swap it out with the old and move on... Unless anyone knows if the XM665 changer and Helm remote will work with anything newer with the ability to accept an iPod and/or Sirius?? I'd rather not get in to changing out the entire set-up if I can.

I just removed an XMD3 from my 2004 390. I replaced it with a CMD5. It works great, nothing wrong with it.

If you are interested let me know your email address.

Dan,
I have a radio but it has tubes not transistors but it sounds just like what you are looking for.

do the xmd3 and the xmd1 have the same bus connection? I thought they were different.

edit to add:
best I could find is that xmd1 had the round cbus connector and the xmd3 has the square cnet connector.

so my advice to you is work a double shift and get a new radio and ipod/connector!

square peg round hole.... sounds about right. It's more of a simlicity driven descision rather than financial. My wife will attest to the fact that when it comes to electronics I have no problem justifying an expense. I'm just trying to figure out how to get this all going myself and when it comes to wiring I'm a dolt!!. My other option is a Clarion FM200 which is a 2 channel stereo FM modulator.. back to the drawing board

so let me get this straight. with this gizmo can I get something like the CDM4 to work with my current changer? Or should I just use this to connect the current changer to an XDM3:huh::huh: My freakin' head hurts, between this and the adventures of trying to point my DishNetwork sat to find both the 110 and 119satelites at the same time..................ugh:smt013

Dan,
I went back and read you original post again. Another problem is the remote. It likely won't work properly with newer head units. I replaced my xmd2 with a xmd3 and the remote display did not work. I replace the xmd3 with cdm4 and new remote.

Yah, that's the lid to Pandora's box I was hoping not to open. Are the cables from the remote to the head unit compatible from XMD1 to XMD3 or to CDM4? I'm guessing not. Might be time to call Best Buy mobile audio lab:smt021

I have called them before to get questions about compatibility answered. Good luck.

PS. whatever you do, don't ask BB.

The remotes from the XMD1 should work with something as new as a CMD3 (not 4 or 5). The changer would have to use the converter to go from c-bus to ce-net. When you joked square plug, round hole you weren't far off as the c-bus was round and ce-net is square. But given the $100 cost of that converter you'd probably be better off just getting the right player instead. Although, if you have an iPod hooked up you're pretty much unlikely to bother using a cd-changer much any more, I know mine has gotten used zero times. That and some of the newer radios will play MP3 tracks from a data CD. You can cram hundreds of MP3 tracks onto a CD that way. The XMD series did not support MP3 playback. I think that was only introduced in the CMD4 model.

I don't know if you "can't" use the old remotes with the new radios. I wouldn't expect them to allow using any of the new features but I don't know if that would include the basic stuff too.

I'm selling the boat and buying one that has the audio system that I want:lol: actually I just sent and email to technicalsupport@marineaudio.com which is Clarion's tech support. with some luck they are hard at work on my problem in India as we speak:smt043. I'll keep you posted but I'm heavily leaning towards Bill's concept of MP3 Cd w/iPod or RCA inputs and either new remote or compatilbe and scrapping the changer all together.
