looking for a trailer for a 280da

Lots of aluminum trailer manufacturers down here in FL make nice bunk style trailers starting at around $3500 in our size range. FastLoad is one. Not sure about CA. I need to replace mine.

I'm also looking for a trailer for my 280 SS. Something that would only be used for a few local haul outs, no long distances. What are the minimum specs that would be safe. I saw a local tri-axle trailer for a cheap price, but the specs seem to be the very minimum for a triple....7500 gvw, 27' 6" overall length. Would this be sufficient just for haul outs and to sit on all winter?

Will the trailer be used in salt water or freshwater? That will determine a lot. Usually galvanized or aluminum is better than painted. Electric brakes are tough to beat, but have some drawbacks depending on where you intend to use your boat. Thorough flushing in salt will be required maintenance. Some like hydraulic over electric, but there is a delay in the response time of the brakes. Surge work, but only when moving forward so don't expect them to stop you from sliding down a slippery launch ramp.

Is your 280 a twin or single engine? Twins might require triple axle depending on the loaded weight of your boat. There are a lot of great brands out there. On the West Coast we see a lot of Calkins/EZ Loader and King trailers. There are others that are good too.

Hey Charlie,
That sounds like it may be a little short but it might work fine for haul outs.
You should talk to a trailer guy and get a pro opinion, i know you want to make sure the hull is supported properly
good luck

Here is my correspondence with LoadMaster when they were building my trailer last year..

Daniel,
Thank you for your inquiry concerning a trailer quote for your Sea Ray 280 SD. We can actually build either a heavy duty tandem axle or triaxle trailer for your boat. It depends on your wants or if you plan on towing extra weight in your boat. Here are the factors we take into account to determine the correct trailer.

Your length is 28'6". However, it is 31' 1" with swim and pulpit. For trailer purposes, we use 30' (transom to bow pulpit) as the length of the boat. For carry capacity:

Boat dry weight with standard I/O engine 8,000lbs
batteries/anchors/buoys, etc. 300lbs
100 gal fuel @ 6.19lb/gal 619lbs
80 gal water/waste @8lb/gal 640lbs
Subtotal 9,559lbs

This does include full fuel, water, waste, but doesn't take into account cabin or deck gear, generator (if applicable), etc. A heavy duty tandem can carry up to 10,673lbs and sells for $5,270. The triaxle can carry up to 13,727lbs. and sells for $5815. Either trailer would be built specific to your boat as far as axle, bunk placement, taking water intakes, etc. into account. You choose the color scheme and can personalize either trailer with options, etc.
I've attached a spec. sheet on both trailers along with a couple of photos. Once you review this information, please feel free to call 1-800-258-6115 or e-mail loadmaster@cros.net for more information, questions, etc. Again, thank you for your interest in our trailers.
