looking for a new boat

Ohh I am and will find something I already called a few brokers and have a couple line d up to look at my main question is this. If I agree on a price and leave adeposit pending survey oil samples seatrial ect. When will I get the sea trial? At my marina the 330 im looking at is buried. He said I will most likely have to wait till spring for the sea trial. But I dought they will hold. A 10 percent deposit for 3-4 months without closing. Im sure a lot of other brokers would be In the same position. Also I do not want to wait that long to sea trial after finding one. What if I dont like it after taking it for a ride. Them im into spring. And haveing to start all over

Jonathan,

That's pretty much the case with majority of boats in the Northeast area off season. When I was boat shopping starting in late August I ended up in similar situation in the late fall when most boats were winterized. I had several attractive deals but the boats were not available for sea-trial and full survey. This is where you need to ask yourself what your comfort level is. Every boat is different and every deal is different. However, I personally was not going to freeze my money and wait 3-4 months to find that the boat I really like doesn't perform well and only then start from scratch. Some people do it and take the chance if they really like a boat with very attractive price. I don't belong to this category of people and if I'm making the commitment a boat has to be made available for a full survey and all necessary inspections/sea-trials to make me feel comfortable about the deal. Anything other than that I simply move on.

Having said that, if you're not comfortable with the fact that the boats you're looking at locally are blocked until spring, IMO there are only couple of options. 1-You either go with a boat that you really know or know the owner (I'm referring to our CSR friends) or 2-you'll have to expand your search region to southern states starting from VA and going down to FL. BTW, my previous boat (320DA) was purchased from Tampa, FL. Obviously, buying remote makes things more complicated, but it's all doable.

As others have said, slow down and don't let the excitement drive your approach. There are TONs of boats out there in mid 30s range with prices all over the board. So, just keep searching and you'll find your next boat with terms and conditions that will meet your comfort level.

Yea well whatever ill just sit back and enjoy the show for now. I'll keep browsing and studying and more browsing. After feb vacationI will start getting seriouse.

How much is a little more?

If you have never run a 330EC/340AJ, you are in for a treat. They have a little "half keel" that makes them track like they are on rails. Other Sea Ray hulls track ok, but none are as predictable or run true as well as the wide body EC's. For a boater whose main activity is diving, fishing or just enjoying being outside, you can't beat the 330EC with a 14' beam. While they aren't a floating condo, it would be very difficult to find a better day boat....unless it is a 370EC.

The nice thing is through Clubsearay, people all over the country may have easy access to a boat to look at one, prior to you flying out. So they can let you know if it is worth your time and/or if the broker seems legitimate. There are going to be plenty of boats for sale for quite some time. Finding the right boat is the hard part. It usually takes me 6 months to a year. Then when you come across the right boat/deal you have to be ready to act quickly. When I was looking for a 260. The guy I had been working with said - I may have one. I got to see the 260 before it even went on the market and bought it immediately.

I fell inlove with thw 330 when I first step foot on it. I was borred sitting on my boat overlooking the brokerage section and spoted her. Just out of curiosity I asked the broker to let me board and take a look around. To say the least I put my boat up for sale the next day. Its perfect for me and how I use my boat. Hes asking 49 im gunna go out sat and put my wonderfull offer of 35, get turned down, and let him sit on the offer till late feb. May work maynot. Who knows maybe ill get lucky. What do you mean it has a small keel?
Sk
I thought about that and will keep it mind. I would really hate to drive or fly far for a junker.

In a normal Sea Ray DA or DB, the stem flattens out into a smallish flat pad, whereas on the widebody EC's, the stem extends well aft which makes the boat run like it is in a groove in the water. In other words, the EC will track straight and true when a DA or DB hull might tend to wander a little in a decent sea. The trade-off is that the EC's are a little wet.

In round numbers.........if your boat was listed at $49K, the seller has already been conditioned by his broker to expect the boat to bring only 90% of that, therefore, the seller will expect the deal close at $44K. Part of negotiating a successful deal is to offer enough so the seller/broker knows you are serious. Obviously, you can low-ball the seller if you want to, but that also puts you at risk of being considered a bottom feeder looking to steal the boat which means you have low credibility with the broker/seller that you must overcome with subsequent offers. I think offering 70% of the ask is low considering that, according to soldboats.com, most deals are closing at 92% of the asking price. If the boat has been on the market for more than 6 months, the seller isn't desparate.......the bank would have already repossessed it. Conditions do not support waiting until Feb to try to buy the boat either. Next spring there will be a short term void in supply in the NE due to Sandy, most buyers up there try to wait until after winter to buy anyway, the overall used market bottomed a year ago so clean used boats are increasing in demand. My simple minded view is that if you want to make a deal on this one, do it sooner rather than later .......and try to make the offer a little easier for the broker to sell.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, Frank is smart. Very smart. Very, very smart.

If you can get your $$$ right, buy now before the rush.

Holy canoli batman that was a very very good explanation and a very good point. I dont even no what to say to that other then OK. I did just get back from my boat to take my personal stuff off and the ins company said I can take my new stereo and speakers gps and anything else I have installed after I bought it witch was nice. I also asked them about my bravo 3 drive. I had brought it home the day before the storm for the winter so its been in my basement. I asked what to do with it and they said keep it. No problem. Thats why its up for sale. Btw how much is it worth used? I had no idea I just gueesed. So after cleaning my boat out I walked over to the one im looking at and took a look at the bottom and running gear. And just admired how fat she is. Btw she has been forsale for almost 18 months now and was only in the water for a short period to go to tobay boat show. Im a little hesitant on that. But the broker knows im seriouse about buying because I had him put my boat up for sale the same day I looked at the 330.just a quick note. The day after the storm I went to check on my boat. I bumped into the broker and asked him if the 330was sold. (There was a sale pending) he told me no the deal fell through the guy couldnt come up with the money. But he also told me they settled on 42k. Why would he tell me that, I have no idea. But then I called him again on friday and he told me it was still available and the bottom line price was 44k Im guessing he forgot he told me what he settled on b4. That being said I think I can get it for 38 39. He also told me the history on the seller. Stock broker that bought it cash and when the market crashed he needed the money. So all in all I think im in a pretty good situation for negotiation. Would you agree.

Ps. He cant be to smart he ownes a hole in the water like the rest of us :smt038

Sounds like you need to make an offer and set up a surveyor! Good luck!

It maybe be blasphemy but nobody disagreed. Ha lol. Sorrry.
Thank you sp I have sewn a couple down south that I would be interested in I just have absolutely no time with work over the next 3 months to do anything. I barely slep and eat as it is. But thank you.
Humph I think your right. Its just the boat is buried. L I said I saw it yesterday and he has to move about 35boats to get it out for a seatrial. And ill be pretty unhappy if I tie up money till march just to find out it runs like sh.t. but I will talk to them.
