Having problems with my anchor rode where the rope splice does the transition from rope to chain at the point where it is supposed to free fall into the locker. Clearance to rode pile is ok and I have trimmed the splice. Any Ideas?:smt115

Did you use and "chain splice"

Is the little lever finger arm - bent. If so the windlass will jam. This is a common problem with that model windlass. I usually bump my windlass through slowly during the transition to insure it doesn't jam.

How hard does the finger move? Could you try spraying some WD-40 in the spring / finger area?

The actual bolt is usually what bends.

The bolt is what holds the finger on the windlass tight. When it jams at the transition - it can bend the bolt. Therefore throwing things off just slightly and then causing further jamming. If you look closely and then look in the anchor locker - you can see how the whole setup works.

Imtra sells a spring and post replacement kit for the progress one. www.imtra.com

I've bought two of their kits and it took me awhile to figure out how to "set" the wimpy stainless replacement spring so that it has enough force to make the finger push firmly on the gipsy--this is the key to getting the rode to wind in reliably. Install the new spring and post, then using your windlass handle, remove the top of the gipsy, then lift off the gipsy. Now, forceably twist the finger towards the gipsy post until you get the stainless spring set and get a good strong force from the finger towards the gipsy. Replace the gipsy, check the force, and repeat if necessary. Once right, the finger will ride with a strong force against the gipsy. If your rode to anchor chain splice is too worn you'll have to cut it off and re-do the splice to get a smooth transition.
