I just made some reservations for two short stays in Florida this February and I was hoping to get some local info from you guys on any land based areas of interest, with maybe a little boat related twinge.

I'm going to Pompano Beach 2/1-6 with the guys. This is mainly a diving trip, but I should have one or two evenings to go galavanting....

Next is an extended Valentines Day weekend in the Sarasota area. 2/15-19.....may visit a few friends in the area...but a trip to a local marina would surely be nice....I'm hoping to hook up with a realestate agent in the area too.....maybe convince the admiral that she wants a small house on a canal...hey you never know....any nice restaurants that anyone would HIGHLY recommend????

thanks,

I was born on Miami Beach, live in Fort Lauderdale and my office is in Pompano Beach...How much fun (or trouble) do you want to get into??? Are you looking for restaurants, bars, night clubs etc? Either PM me or let me know here on the thread.

Barry

Marinajacks has been put on the list....thanks

I'm going to call tomorrow to see if I can rent a small boat to go tootling up and down some canals....maybe shoot out to the gulf for quick spin too.

In Pompano, I'll be with the guys....looking for good burger joints and, because it's SuperBowl weekend, I'll need a good sports bar to watch the game....can't do too much drinking as I'm diving wrecks every morning....I'd kinda like to surface when the dive is over.......not to mention, at 51, a night out with boys ain't what it used to be.....

Dom,

One option for boat rentals in the Sarasota area is Cannons Marina on Longboat Key. They allow a very wide range with their rentals, from Venice up to the bottom of Tampa Bay. Their website is found here: www.cannons.com

If you are looking for restaurants on Longboat Key and/or Anna Maria Island; Moore's Stone Crab: http://home.earthlink.net/~mooresrest/ and Mar Vista http://www.marvista-restaurant.com/ on Longboat are fun and accessible by water. On Anna Maria Island, you can access Rotten Ralph's http://www.rottenralphs.com/index.html and the Bridge Tender http://www.bridgetenderinn.com/.

Enjoy your trip to that beautiful piece of Florida. I can't wait till we head down to our time share in June.

Mike

if you want to see some nice boats, it's hard to beat Longboat Key Moorings. In fact, we may even be there on a Sea Ray Rendesvouz that weekend (if the kids aren't having a softball tourney that weekend).

Pure Platinum if you want to get him in trouble... ;-)

A few sports bars in the area, Bru's Room, Champs is a good place in Pompano Beach, just west of 95 and Atlantic. Sea Watch is a great restaurant on the water in Pompano Beach, but a more laid back place would be Shooters on the water, Oakland Park Blvd and the intracoastal, fun atmosphere, food, and raft ups of great boats and yachts.

Let me know when you are in town if you need some directions and more info..PM me and I'll give you my cell.

Mike:

If you guys are on a Renezvouz I'll stop by the area to say hello....longboat key will be on the list...probably a lunch spot with the admiral...I' hooking up a with a friend from up here in Jersey who is driving down the week before me....he's also a boater and has an '06 38DA. I hope we can get together with you guys too!

Barry:

I'm diving with http://www.southfloridadiving.com/ and staying at a hotel right in their marina....nothing fancy, but should be close to all the stuff you're talking about...We don't have a rental car for the Pompano stay because we're expecting to be diving most free time....but I will have to watch the Super Bowl Sunday, and if my Giants can get by the Cheese boys next weekend, I may have a vested interest...I'll PM you my cell also....

thanks for all the help guys...

You are a wise man. There are plenty of places in Pompano / Ft Lauderdale that are down right sleazy.

Barry gave you a good list. Bru's room on Federal Hwy, just south of Atlantic is a great place to watch a game. It is right across from the MMax dealership.
Champs is also good but a bit west of your location. You could also head downtown to the new river. Lots of nice places to get a beer, have some food and watch a game, The Briney, Tarpon Bend, Dicey Riley's are just a few.

Enjoy your visit and stay away from the places I mentioned earlier.

First of all...the weather down here is Fan-freakin'-tastic!!!!

The Dives so far are great too. We got in late Friday and did three dives yesterday. A two tank day dive on the wreck "Captain Dan" and then a drift dive. Then we went out for a night dive on the wreck "Ancient Mariner".

Bottom temps are 73F...air temp in the mid 80's.....I can't believe that it's February. It was funny watching TV at the lounge eating a burger between dives when they talked about ground hog day....nobody seemed to care how many more weeks of winter there would be....heck...down here, I guess you hope for winter all year....

Tons of Sea Rays down here too!!! The Hotel is right on the canal.

Plan on doing 4 dives today and go watch the game....if I can stay awake!!

later,

I'm Back in NJ from Pompano. Didn't get out much at night as we were either too tired from diving all day or actually out night diving. I watched a FANTASTIC SuperBowl game in the hotel lobby....

Heading back down to Florida next Friday....this time to the West Coast....

Loved the weather....and thanks for the advise...

Got into Sarasota last night and went downtown for dinner at a small Italian (surprise, surprise) street side restaurant....Epicure's. Food was great. Then we took a walk down to Marina Jacks and had a drink at the dockside and walked the docks....

Heading over to Longboat Key's today, Saturday. We'll be just walking around.....

Mike; You gonna be at the Rendezvous? Maybe we'll run into you!!!

Dom -

Sorry man. Softball tourney with my 9th grader came up, so guess what I did all weekend? She is grinding into high gear in pursuit of a college career, which has effectively killed our boating opportunities.

I have the boat listed casually right now. I may have to get serious about selling it.

One team she tried out for will play in Colorado, NC, FL, Oklahoma, and Texas, over the time period of April - August.

Her team that she is currently on will play weekend tourneys every other weekend from April til Nov, with a weeklong tourney at Disney World, another weeklonger in Orlando, a 5 day in Ft Lauderdale, and a 4 day in Chattanooga. We are trying to qualify the team for a trip to Oklahoma and/or Texas, and will probably have to play our way through NC to do so.

It is going to be the tournament spring/summer/fall from hell. With that in mind, it might not be worth it to hang onto this vessel.

Pondering it now. I have a hard time not supporting my daughter's dreams, though.
