So the admiral and I are going to start shopping for life insurance. I know nothing about life insurance, so just trying to gain some insight into what to look for, good companies, etc.

Well, buy the term you and your wife agree you need to survive and hope it is a bad investment. You shouldn't need life insurance at some point unless you look at Universal Life and products like that.

Buy term.Stay away from "investment" type life insurance products.

Wow, how old you, do you have kids, how old are they or do you plan having them ? and if so how many over how many years and what your goals, obligations, future obligations...? just a death benefit or deferred taxes.... really here on CSR ???

If you must, term, term, term insurance. Maybe get a book from Dave Ramsey and check out his thoughts on Life Insurance. Personally I could do without it.
