I just had a Lewmar Windlass installed. I'm getting mixed feedback on how the anchor rope should be prepared to attach to the chain. One camp says use a rope with a braided loop. Other camp says to use a thimble and a wire rope clip. Is either correct? Are both correct?

Neither. It should be (tightly) braided directly to the link. Use a "back splice" - it's basically the same as an eye splice.

It is very easy to learn to splice and once you get the hang of it, you'll be splicing your dock lines next... There are plenty of on line "how to's"... here is one:

back splice: http://www.veoh.com/watch/v3794681Z...+06+The+Back+Splice+(Including+the+Wall+Knot)

If you don't have a fid to spread the line, a small phillips head screw driver or a knitting needle works well. Be sure to tape the strands before starting and I normally finish by using rescue tape to secure the ends and make for a clean splice...

Most small cruisers lack the fall needed to function properly, the 700 needs 12 inches. Even the windlass installed by SR lacks the fall the windalss manufacturer recommends. The 3 strand will not fall and lay flat enough to allow for much length of rode. The 8 plait helps prevent jamming but even it is not perfect. I have a pro tie my anchor line since the chain, swivel, and anchor are worth $500 bucks, I'm not trusting that to my inexperience tying knots. This knot has to feed through the windlass so it has to be right. MM

I put a V700 on my 300 when I purchased the boat, I ordered 100' of chain and 100' of 3 strand and the company did the splice for free. It has worked great for the past 3 years. Very seldom do I have the rope section out but with having 100' of chain coming in makes it lay down flat so I have not had any problems, the extra 200lbs on the bow sure did make a difference getting the boat on plane faster.

On a vessel that size you likely have a roomier rode locker. You also have a shorter rode than I with 200 feet of line plus chain. The 8 plait is for lay in the locker for smaller locker boats as well as better grip on the windlass. MM
