Lets Talk Canvas/Upholstery..especially 290da owners

Naturally, the mid 90's models.I'd like to see how yours is set-up.I'm having mine done this week and changing some stuff.

Mine is OEM great lakes stuff:

Do not like:
1..My front canvas goes down to the windshield from the arch.Horrible idea.Loses headroom and hinders vision.

2.My rear enclosure is just the arch to the transom curtain.Horrible for anything other than storage.

I do have the rear bimini that is new and get to use that as a frame and top for the camper enclosure.

I'm also having the rear bolster redone. The wood is all rotted out and the vinyl is done. The guy is doing this in poly board.

I have an estimate for $2200 to do the new front with a 16-18" clear/eisenglass windshield. The rear camper enclosure with door and mostly clear/eisen again. This also includes the rear bolster cushion being rebuilt.

He's suggesting screens for the front and rear.I'm not sure on that.

Here is what she looks like now.

First of all that trailer looks a bit to small for a 29 ft criuser :wow:. $2200 for just a front canvas is to much. Shop around I got 3 clear windows done for little over $200.and just about $250 to have my front redone an my 1998 290. I would look again at the size of that trailer you need a TRI-AXLE trailer for a boat this size...you got abit much rear hanging out just a thought......

I paid $250 to have my front glass replaced. Junk. Ended up buying new glass from Great Lakes. They run specials (%20 off) and are good to deal with. Something custom will require continued custom in the future. I'd call Great Lakes and see if there is something stock that can get you what you want.

Normally, you guys would all be spot-on on the trailer unfortunately, you're all mistaken. The trailer is a 9800 lb rated tandem.6-lug 225's with 4w discs. The 290 single is about 7k.I will concede it would look better to run a triple. However, I bought this 06 for $1400.The springs are not stressed and the tires are not maxed at all.It tows well.Hangover in the rear means nothing at this size.I've had her on i for over a year and she has been good.I need to adjust my tongue weight a few inches forward more but that's about it.

Lol, now the truck is what is over-rated.This is flat Florida so that helps a ton. That and I don't tow her much.

On the top....the $2200 is for everything. The entire front top and custom windshield while redoing the SS frame to allow an actual windshield. The sides and rear camper enclosure. It also includes the rear bolster on the transom being rebuilt.Which will be a nightmare.

I'm not sure where you guys are getting the $250 for the front top to be done but the sunbrella material is more than that.

Here is his breakdown on cost.

1..recover front top w/extra frame to make windshield..$615.

2..Front windshield..$275.It is to be 3 parts zippered openings with 30ga.

3..4 pc rear enclosure.2 sides mostly plastic.$450
1..Rear curtain same way mostly plastic.$345
1..Transom doorway.$165

4..Aft bolster cushion rebuilt w/polyboard..$385

In his words this is on the high side to be safe.

Te lowest I got on the seat was $300 but I have to trailer it is 60 miles and leave it.The camper enclosure got me 3 quotes of $800 for the entire rear.

The front was my 1st quote but he is doing it all before the end of the month here in my driveway so I can use it for Labor weekend. He is supposed to do great work.

This is his site. His mobile trailer set-up is actually in my storage yard.I've used him once before and he seems a bit picky.I'm hoping this works to my benefit.

I would stay away from screens in the front. Either clear windows or nothing. With a screen any water that splashes on it becomes a little drop suspended in the mesh and is impossible to see through. Trust me. On the sides and back with less splashing and visibility not as critical then yes use screens under the clear.

The screen for me anyway does not add any more to put up or down. I guess it takes up marginally more space to store. My screens are integral to the canvas along with the clear.

I cannot really help you with a price advice however. I did get a full camping enclosure that covered all four sides and top on a 25 foot pontoon boat 4 years ago and paid $1800 (with offers up to $3000).

When I get around to replacing my canvas, I will likely get the same canvas setup found on the 96-97 290's. In 96, Sea Ray raised the bimini and added clear to the front. I may get it through Great Lakes when they run a sale. I think I will get screens on the 3 camper curtains only.

BTW -- about your trailer. The 94 290 single eng had a listed dry weight of 7700. In 95, they changed the dry weight spec of the 290 single to 8500, but the boat didn't change. They got the weight spec wrong in 94. Your 290 weighs at least 8500, and probably a bit more. Does your trailer have a CAPACITY rating of 9800? Or, is the GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT rating 9800? The GVW rating includes the weight of the trailer, while the Capacity rating is just for the boat. If the capacity rating is 9800, you're in great shape. If the GVW is 9800, you're a bit overloaded because that trailer weighs at least 1300 lbs.

Typically, a dual axle trailer to handle the 290 would have 16" wheels with 8 lugs.

You're probably fine for local trips, and I do not look badly on you at all for using a trailer that might be a bit overloaded. I just wanted to give you some info so you know all the details of your situation.

Also, you might want to move your bow stand forward a bit. The bottom of transom should be flush with the back of the bunks. But, you have to make sure the bow pulpit can't hit the Escalade.

9800lb capacity.It's an odd ball.

I agree on the pulpit mount coming forward a little.I need it forward another 5" I think.I had it loaded initially by forklift and thought it was fine. It's hard to do it now just by ramp loading....which means I usually forget to do it.

yes, I'm doing the updated style forward canvas.I want that front windshield and headroom.

I can remove my screen, or pin it up into the arch over the poly glass enclosure, the screen really helps with the green flys etc, especially at night keeping it intact when we're completley enclosed...

Now see, that's neat. Not gonna happen on ours though. Our arch is waaay back and would result in trying to roll all that up and out of the way.

I really like that snap idea.

This is the whole camper back...
you can roll up just the stratoglass and keep the screens intact, or roll up the whole unit itself.....

I love that camper canvas on billnpat's. The 310 cockpit is so roomy, and that canvas setup really turns the cockpit into another room.

For front screens on the 290, I guess you could have part of the front curtain screen snap back onto snaps attached to the bimini frame bow.

One last trailer question --- What is the GVW? If the capacity is 9800, then the GVW should be around 11000. If you take the GVW and subtract 9800, you will know the weight of the empty trailer.

This is what I was after...mostly plastic. He said about 12" on bottom and all glass with 1.5" borders and 3" top.Full glass door etc etc.

My sides are going to be tricky though. My arch is narrow compared to yours.

7/8th's SS extended framework to match mine with SS fittings
Black #138 Poly stitching
#10 YKK zippers
30ga glass all around
Blue Tweed canvas
SS male snaps with Nickel over brass caps to SS sockets.
Roll-ups and snaps in all sections.

He said that if I change my mind about the screens he'll out them in from the same price later on.

The place we boat is 72 degree fresh water spring. The bugs are a non-issue really.Lights attract them at night but screens are not going to stop that.

I had some made for my 1995 290. And a back rest added. I still have the old stuff for sale.
Poles and all. It is teal.

Mine has the arch and is totally different when up or down.I think yours with all glass might look funny. The arch breaks up the sections.

I'm betting you got a lot of tongue weight.

Well she is getting there. They are to finish up tomorrow. Zippers in rear side curtain are not in yet as it the back door and curtain. They also have to install the rear bolster cushion. I'm a little iffy on the wavy on the rear side panels. Look sloppy right now.
