Hi Guys,
Just had the boat launched, summarized and ready to go. The mechanic noted on my bill that my port side rudder post has a slight leak, and to keep an eye on it. What exactly does that mean, new seals or tighten something........or haul out? No sure can someone enlighten me please.
Cheers Rob

You should be able to tighten the packing nut. There is a process that I can’t remember without looking at it. I’m sure someone will “steer” you in the right direction. (See what I did there)

It is sort of unusual for a rudder post to leak, but the nut can be tightened as mentioned. Not a big issue unless there is salt water coming in. Even if you are in fresh water I would tighten it, although it may stop of its own accord once it gets wet. These can be repacked like shaft glands using similar materials. In approximately 10,000 hours of running boats I've never encountered the problem on my boats nor had a friend who had this issue. Running aground can cause the problem.

Thanks guys, I think the packing probably dried out over the winter and will seal itself over time. If not I will check the packing nut.
Cheers Rob
