Yeah and ours changed again as my daughter has a 102 temp...
So we're laying low....Oh well

Todd,

Hope your daughter gets over it soon.

I got my outdrive put back together today and hit the water for a checkout ride. Some outdrive parts are on the UPS truck from an unmentionable source, but my boat was begging me to put it mack together in the meantime so it could go play. ,It was great!

I did reach way back in there and spin the drive shaft support bearing in the gimbal housing. It had a few rough spots. It is a long way back in there. I might have to hire a gynecologist to change that one!

Thanks Dave, She's feeling better this morning.
Did you say that you went out without parts that are on their way?

I just put it back together with the parts that were there. The only things missing were the two covers/nuts for the backside of trim cylinders. I have a bell housing removal tool on order, as I need to remove that to get in to where I can replace my trim sender wire. Also have some seals coming, and new friction nuts for the outdrive to bell housing bolts.

The outdrive is really easy to take off. Just put it in neutral, disconnect the speedo cable, remove the nuts that hold the trim cylinder outer ends and tie them up, take off the six nuts and hold on the outdrive, and off it comes. Oh, and take the prop off so it will fit on the outdrive dolly I have.

I found that I leaked about 10 oz. of water into the bilge in about 4 hours. It is all coming from the transom area, and I think it is leaking by the steering lever seal. I don't know what the looks like, but I probably will after I replace the trim sender wire.

Neutral?? I thought forward was the ticket... :smt017

I just changed the upper pivot shaft seal on my '86 Alpha 1. Let me know if I can help ya out...

Actually, I started to pull it apart for forward, looked in, and the shift cable was nowhere near coming loose. I did not have the manual at hand, so went and got it. Said neutral, so I pushed it back together, put it in neutral, and pulled it apart.

I may have been remembering forward from my '65 100HP outboard. It was very much harder to put back together than the Bravo II. I think it was forward, but had to be in precisely the right position, or you would get off a spline on the shifter. :smt013

Oh, I just found this link on the net. It does say forward. I will check tomorrow and make sure I am not suffering from old timers disease.

I will keep you in mind if I have questions. So far I am just waiting for the tools and parts to arrive. Getting a tool to check alignment also, might as well do that while it is apart. I keep getting the urge to paint some of this stuff some other color than black, so I can see. It is especially hard to see on the inside of the transom housing.

So if you see a boat with a black drive unit, a white gimbal ring, a red bell housing, and a gray gimmbal housing, that will be me!

Dave,
Where are you buying your parts? Mercruiser dealer or someplace online?
And that outdrive dolly, is it the kind I've seen around lately that is bright yello plastic that snaps together and holds the outdrive in a vertical position? I am going to be purchasing it anyday now, but if there's something else/better....?

Thanks,

Tom
