Lake Michigan Fish Nets

Saw this and I am concerned. Getting ready to go up north right now. We broke a blade off a 1500 dollar prop six miles west of Ludington three years ago. The next year we ran up the middle of the lake probably 40 miles offshore with no problems. Now, with the water temps in the 30s, I wonder which is better since the locations of these suckers is unknown. If you had a major problem, it might be better to be closer to shore in order to increase the odds of more timely help.

All the nets have been cleared , they've had that barge out there for over a month from manistee to grand haven . We were fishing Whitehall mi when we saw the barge and tug working and my line found a net they missed lost a lure and board. But they are all gone now

Boltman, thanks for the update. I hope you are right. We won't be heading north for a while. However when we do go I will still keep a watch for the rouge net.

Agree. Thanks for the update.

Please report any news about this issue.

Great thread. We are headed north up the coast this Friday for 10 days and this was a concern of mine. We went from Grand Haven to Muskegon last Saturday and passed two nets just South of Muskegon. One of them was in less than 25 feet of water.

Hi Wet Doggg,

I believe we saw you Saturday, anchored on the north side of the inner pier? Can't miss that custom canvas. The plan is to head to Ludington this Friday, June 27th for either one or two nights depending on the weather. We'll then stop at Frankfort and maybe Leleand on the way to Charlevoix, where we have two nights booked at the municipal there. We'll take our time coming back hitting the places we missed on the way up. It all depends on the weather as you know....especially because we have a 6 and 8 yr old aboard. What are your plans?

BrewCrew - stop by B Dock in Charlevoix and say hi if you get a minute.

Yes...that was us. One of our favorite spots to throw the hook. Our plan was leaving Saturday morning and going to Pentwater for Saturday, Sunday night. Ludington for Monday and Tuesday, Frankfort for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights. Play Saturday and Sunday by ear heading home. However he wind forecasts I have been looking at look pretty intense. Especially Sunday and Monday, have not seen later in the week yet. First time distance cruise with this boat and do not want to be traveling then. I have a 7 year old and twin 5 year olds so you know the drill. Hopefully we can meet up sometime.

Sounds good wet doggg. We'll keep an eye out for you and hope to meet up. Enjoy it.

Back to the fish net thread....sorry for derailing it.

Sounds like we're all going to cross paths this weekend. We're heading for Frankfort Saturday staying until Sunday, them looking to go to elk rapids for Monday and Tuesday , then heading back to Leland on Wednesday and Thursday heading back to Ludington for Friday the 4th oh and the craft show in ludington Saturday returning back to Whitehall maybe Saturday early evening if weather permits .

Boltman, have you and others heard about the two nets that have yet to be found? How far offshore do you run going north? We generally stay 10-12 miles off to avoid the local fishermen. Also, has fog been an issue? We've had quite a lot of it in Grand Haven.

Fog hasn't been an issue for us this year....YET!!!! We generally run close to the shoreline when running up north, maybe a mile or two out, but we travel more towards midday so no fisherman issues. As for those NETS you'll never see them they have broken loose from all markers and anchors. Long story there about these Nets, Indians Hired a Fisherman to set the Nets last summer, well in the fall He went to prison for Sexual asualt charges.... and nobody retrieved the nets all winter long, and this is the mess we're left with. I haven't heard of the two misssing nets yet that haven't been found...of coarse the probably have NO idea where they are at....This doesn't make me a happy camper...
The admiral doesn't really like to lose site of Land... and I respect that for her...after all we'supposed to keep our women Happy right???
Well maybe we'll see some of you up there out and about... I am going to try some fishing in Frankfort though... gotta catch my dinner...hahahha
Where do you get your wind reports from? I'd like to have them in my computer, I've also got sirrus satelight weather, not very helpful though.

We have Sirius weather as well, but base our travel decisions on TV forecasts, regional radar showing storm activity and wind direction and speed on the day before we plan on moving the boat. Knowing that the wind shifts on Lake Michigan tend to move clockwise, for example, suggests that NW winds will shift to the NE sometime during the next day. Then to the SE to S. As long as they are in a 10-15 mph range, travel in a north or south direction is generally comfortable. I've not found any computer models or reports that do anything more than confirm what you can figure out on your own by watching TV and local weather conditions.

I have used Sailflow.com. They also have an app as well. Seems pretty accurate. We too will be cruising up the shoreline due to my wife not liking cruising far off shore.

.......looking to go to elk rapids for Monday and Tuesday......

We're headed to Elk Rapids Friday-Sunday and maybe Monday. We'll keep an eye out for you Boltman......

BTW - Sorry to be so far off topic from the fish net thread.... My bad!
