No offense to jet ski owners but why do the majority think they dont create a wake????? Relaxing in a cove the other day and here comes one with 3 girls on it just running around. they are going slow and just dragging through the water. Numerous other examples. Oh well....

Get used to it..............it happens to us all the time. :smt021

I know it makes me mad too but you just can't fix STUPID and that is what folks like this are. :smt013

The basic problem is that lots of jet ski operators are not boaters. They don't know or understand the rules. Same problem with some boat owners (or worse - renters) but to a lesser degree. It's just easier, and therefore more apparant, with jet skis.

I think ignorant is a better description than stupid.

I know what you mean! I was in our 13' Whaler just entering the harbor, No wake zone markers were about 10 yards in front of us when I backed it down to idle speed. As I approached the markers, a jet boat passed within 20 feet of us at 15 to 20 mph and continued 25 yards passed the no wake zone before shutting it down. His two foot wake rocked us a little but I couldn't believe what a stupid move he made. I agree with Dave S comment, you can't fix stupid....

Last weekend we were anchored out in a cove. Our bow was about 20' off the shore with the kids swimming behind the boat. I hear the whinning sound and get up to see a jet ski passing between the bow and shore (over my anchor rode) at about 40 MPH, all smilin' and wavin'. F'n idiots!

I love stupid jetskiers.

<-------- Jetski Mechanic

The amount of people that bring their jetski's in due to someone other than them riding it. Usually its kids destroying their parents jetski's.

I had a guy last year tell me seadoo should make their intake grates tighter so they couldn't suck rocks up and destroy the impeller. :smt009

Does he know its supposed to be used in the water and not on land?! Same kind of person who would tear their skeg off doing 30mph.

Its amazing how many people think jetski's can drive through a foot of water because the props "inside" the jetski. They don't think about the suction that's going on in that foot of water.

I was out riding my Sea Doo RXT-X yesterday morning. I saw a few people out on PWCs, who were mostly behaving themselves. Most of the boneheads blowing though the no-wake zones were in little 20-22 footers. Fortunately, I carry an Icom M1V VHF. Between my ride on the PWC and running Just Ducky yesterday, we must have seen 5 or 6 state police boats on the water.

I have 2 jet ski's and I agree that there is a lot of bone head people out riding them but also there is a lot of bone heads behind wheels of boats as well. I do have friends ride my jet skis but I have a strict instruction course before we go about rules of the road. As well as anyone who is required to have a boating safety course must take the course and have their passed cert. before they come up to ride. In ohio you must have certificate if born before 1982. As well as they must pass my course. We enjoy our jet ski's as much as our boat but we respect other water crafts. I think you will find bone heads in about any kind of vehicle. Sorry that a few inconsiderates give the rest of us a bad rap.

We were anchored last weekend behind a little island on our lake having lunch and my girls like to sit on the swim pad and throw bread to the ducks. Two teenage jetskiers thought it was funny to tear a** towards the ducks at 40 MPH and then turn suddenly before they hit the ducks and splash them. It upset my girls. I wish I could have gotten their registration numbers or reached out far enough to rip them from their toys.

Some of the jetskiers I see on our lake are responsible. Then there are the idiots who don't think about the big, heavy, dangerous machine they are operating realizing that there may be consequenses for their actions.

Jetskis are like the crotch rockets (motorcycles) of the water. Operated by kids who have no disregard for their saftey and the saftey of others.

<off soapbox>

The irony of all of this is that your girls were doing more harm to these ducks by feeding them the bread, then the jet skiers were.

There is only one Jet skier that I could possibly over look stupid activity from. The rest, I would just as soon run over with my boat.

Scott, you old softy...ok, maybe not a softy exactly.

There is a whole group (5 or 6) of stand-up skis that frequent a cove we like to hang in. They are always very respectful and mindful of the "rules of the road". Not all jet skiers are idiots.

So, back to the OP...

I don't quite understand what you're upset about. Was this cove legally posted as a "no wake" zone? If so, you've got every right to gripe.

Otherwise, no...
It seems you were having a nice "relaxing" time in a "quiet" cove. I get that... but you don't own it. As long as the riders were not operating in an unsafe manner (you didn't say they were), why do you think they should have been operating at no-wake speed?

If you don't want to be rocked by wakes (hey, nobody likes it, but it's part and parcel of boating), find a no-wake zone to anchor in...

I am 46 yrs old and own a Waverunner. I have regard for safety of others while running my boat and riding my PWC. I don't feed bread to ducks.

Hey Jim... I don't mean that all PWC owners/operators are irresponsible. It's unfortunate that the majority where I boat are. Riding last night with just me and my 5 yerar old daughter I had a PWC circle me jumping my wake and crossing my bow several times while I was running at 30 MPH. Just not safe. I had to throttle down and stop to get him to go away. I wish there were more of you on my lake.

As for the bread, I admitted I had no idea. I come here to get educated in all aspects of boating and learned something new today. I will pass this education along to my daughters and find a new safe way to admire the ducks.

Have a great night.

IMHO. The OP, I believe, is a basic question of common sense and respect for others and not specifically about so-called “lake lice”. People go into coves to anchor and do their thing, whatever that may be. It is a refuge from the open water. Irrespective of any rules/regulations or laws, you just don't go blasting into a cove and disturb everybody. There is no need for a “no wake zone” sign. We don't need more laws or rules/regulations, we already live in enough of a police state. But, there is a need for some people to be taught some manners and to have some respect for their fellow man. Common sense, however, is out of a lot peoples pay grade, so, you have deal with them on a case by case basis.

If someone wants to go into a cove where other boaters are anchored and make a wake because there is “no law against it”, then that is that is their right. They are probably the same person that passes you on the road and then makes a right turn within the next 500 feet.

In the subject situation, I happen to think that it is appropriate to raise both hands as if to ask, why are you being a jerkopotumus? There is no rule/regulation or law against that.

Just my 2 cents worth.
