We are thinking of taking a 7 to 10 day trip along the Michigan shoreline in Lake Huron. I checked the DNR Map of Michigan Harbors so I have an idea of the facilities available.

We are considering going as far as Port Austin ... unless someone can convince us there is an awesome location further north that we just have to see. The absolute furthest north we will go is Presque Isle. We were hoping for a destination where we could enjoy nature, hiking, etc..

We went to Lexington a couple years ago. It was a quaint sleepy little town with not a lot to do or see ... which was only good for a couple days maximum. Is there anyone who has been to harbors north of Lexington? If so, where, what were the highlights, things to see and do?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :smt100

Kim, do you realize that Port Austin isn't even half way to Presque Isle?

Would you consider doing the Ontario side instead?

If not, Presque Isle is far enough north to give you that true "up north" feeling and hiking options etc...

Otherwise most of the ports along the way will be variations of Lexington, but less "touristy" and more fishing/camo oriented.

If you're willing to go up along the east side, you'll enjoy ports such as Grand Bend, Bayfield, Goderich, and Port Elgin on your way up to Tobormory, which distance-wise is about the same as Alpena. (not as far as Presque Isle)

You could go across the saginaw bay to east tawas from port austin its only a 1.5 hr ride.
