I am plotting out a few trips for this season (I am optimistic about gas prices staying reasonable.) Welcome your advice & comments on the following trips from Sandusky Bay to:

  1. Red Bull Air Races (Detroit River): Did anyone attend on your boat last year? Are there good places on the river to anchor & watch the show?
  2. Gold Cup (Detroit River): Same questions - is this event viewable from a boat?
  3. OSU vs. Akron @ Cleveland Browns Stadium: Looking for a place to transom-gate, preferably within walking distance. I've heard you can tie-up to a wall at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame - is this true? Draft limitations? Any suggestions on local marinas to dock the night before?
  4. Jobbienooner (St. Clair) - I'll be forty next year and feel the need to get this trip in before I turn to dust. Any advice for a novice? Suggestions on a Detroit marina to dock the night before?
Thanks in advance - Matt

I went to the Gold Cup last year. We stayed at Keens marina, and had a great view. From the bridge, we could see what was going on, but there is a large concrete pier at the end of the dock, and everyone sets up chairs to watch the race. Great time! Last year the wind was too strong and they called off the finals. Two boats flipped. The finals are now held this year.

Matt,

Stay at MacRay Harbor in Lake St Clair for Jobbienooner. It's the best-run marina in the Great Lakes. Everyone receives excellent service there - but I can let them to know you're coming to guarantee it.

As far as J-N itself: anchor a safe distance from the island, and if at all possible, borrow someone else's dinghy to go ashore. :)

:thumbsup:As for the cleveland browns game, yes you can tie up at the rock hall, you wont have to worry about draft, and there are several marinas you can dock at, like east 55th marina or to the west of the stadium you have edgewater marina, hope this helps, if you need any more info on the cleveland area let me know. Dont forget to check out Shooters in the flats for dinner after the game, they will serve you dinner right on your boat at the dock!!!!! robert

I went via boat to the airraces last year. My mooring was between Belle Isle and the course. It wasn't bad. You'll need lots of anchor line to compensate for current/depth/waves. there will be lot's of boat traffic, so be careful.

You forgot to mention the Blue Angels will be at the air show at Selfridge A.N.G. Base. You'll be able to see many of the plane flying from the water (Anchor Bay).

Enjoy!

Actually I believe it will be the Thunderbirds performing at the Air Show for 2009. Still a great show.

Question, and not to hi-jack the thread, but is anyone planning a CSR raft-off for any of these events?

We hit jobbie every year. You don't need a marina just stay on the hook.
Be sure to get there early cause by 10 am the island will be packed and hard to get close.

If you are not close than you'll need to dinghy to the island.

Just across the lake is Metro beach with plenty of docks
and showers.

The air show on the bay is always so amazing. Just a great day on the lake with the jets overhead.

I'd be more than willing to make the trip up if I knew there were gonna be other CSR Members there too. Does anyone know the dates of these events?

I'd be in for a raft - off!
I may not make it to D-Town, but a raft off in lake MI would be cool. You guys should come over to grand haven and we can raft up at CG fest.

More information is below:
  1. Red Bull Air Races (Detroit River): 6/13 & 6/14. http://www.redbullairrace.com/ We are planning on attending 6/14.
  2. Gold Cup (Detroit River): 7/11 & 7/12. http://www.gold-cup.com/ I don't think we will be attending this - conflicts with a trip to Maumee Bay.
  3. OSU vs. Akron @ Cleveland Browns Stadium: 9/19.
  4. Jobbienooner (St. Clair) - 6/26.
  5. Sandusky Bay - Barge Party @ the Sand Bar: 6/13. Band from 1-4PM. Same weekend as Ohio Bike Week. http://www.ohiobikeweek.com/content.aspx?PID=2 I think we'll be hitting this even on Saturday then heading upt to the Red Bull race...
Plenty of opportunities to burn gas!

Never heard of the barge party at the sandbar. Can you give me some info? That is one of our favorite spots to play

The folks @ Cove Carryout Marina (Shepherds) hosted 2 last year. They set up a barge with a band at the sand bar on the south side of the Bay Point sandbar. We missed both events last year...but heard a good time was had by all. I noticed by chance this year's is posted on the Ohio Bike Week site.

I'll definitely be getting a nice spot for the gold cup and the air races. From what I've read, anchoring near the ambassador bridge is the way to go for the airshow so I'll say right now...that anyone wanting to go, can get at me and we can work it out.
