Peg and I will be making a run up the Hudson to Lake Champlain soon. We're planning an overnight in Albany so we can have a full day to run the locks, and at least a few days in Burlington, but otherwise haven't made a lot of plans. Part of the point is to get off the grid and maybe anchor out in some beautiful, isolated cove where my cell phone won't work.

We'd love to hear suggestions from the folks who have been up that way. We're dinghy-less, so that restricts us; we either need a place to tie up or just hang safely at anchor (or swim to shore!).

I'm a huge fan of Wilsboro Bay. It is stunnin and peaceful. Wilsboro Bay Marina was spectacularly quiet when I was there about six years ago and is in the middle of nowhere. It's also an easy shot from Burlington. Don't know if it's out of cell phone range but you can't help it if you forgot to plug on the charger.

Thanks, we'll check it out.

But there must be SOMEONE else who's made the Champlain run?

Burton Island State Park is very nice. It's located in St. Albans Bay and very well protected from the common southerly winds. Deep Bay in Point Au Roche is also very nice, but there is a fee for overnight moorings. Valcour Island is nice but on weekends is usually packed. There are numerous places on the Northern end of the lake on both the New York and Vermont side. If your looking for a marina, I'm slipped at Treadwell Bay Marina, very quiet and protected. They have very good docks, inground pool, tennis courts, nature trails and very good restaurant.

I just got back from Lake Champlain and know the lake well. Here are some thoughts. First I second Wilsboro Bay the marina is great and their resturant is great. Burllington is a fun place to see in the summer, lots of places to eat and shopping.

Going 10-15 miles south you can stop in Essex, NY to anchor or grab a slip. Further south you can anchor at one my favorate spots on the New York side Barn Rock. It's on most charts and GPS and has great protection when the wind is from the north.

Across the lake is North Bay which is good when the wind is from the south. It also is where my wifes family has a house. You can anchor there or grab one of the moorings owned by the Basin Harbor Club. Their main bay is the next one south and also has splips. BHC is an upscale throw back resort, think Dirty Dancing, worth stopping at.

Further south but only a 4 mile trip from Basin Harbor is Westport Marina. Kind of layed back place but they have many transant slips.

Hope that helps.

another vote for wesport. its been a few years, but there was a nice town in walking distance and a decent restaurant on prem. Valcore Island is great for anchoring as was said. Burton Island is great but has nothing to do but relax. Had a small general store too.
