Every time I pull my boat out of water I get a low coolant error on generator. Sometimes when I put it back in the water the error goes away. Usually I have to open hatch and start genset manually then the error goes away. The remote start in the cabin won’t start with this error.

Is this normal? Any workarounds?

Do you have your manual for the remote panel start?

I had one on my 2011 and hated it. Once you check and fix/repair the error there is a sequence to pushing buttons to clear the codes. Some codes can be cleared by just turning on and off the battery feeding the generator.

Bumping back to top. Im thinking removing inboard exhausts x2 may be option.

Is this a kohler 5e? I had a similar issue, however my gen doesn't have an electronic panel so it would just shut down when it got warm. There is a bleed screw on the top of the case that you can open when filling coolant. In my case I had an airlock somewhere in the system and when I opened this bleed screw and "burped" the coolant line by hand, I was able to add about a half quart of additional coolant. It has run like a top since.

I had an error code which turned out that the impeller fins were broke I replaced it gen ran great for about 8 hours (on and off) now the same code is coming up and auto shut down. Coolant is good and has water discharging out of exhaust like normal. Not sure what else to do.

What model?
How often are you putting boat in/out of water that this is a problem? Are you running it on land?

It’s a Kohler 5ECD 5 kw. I just bought the boat 3 weeks ago. Replaced the impeller checked the strainer which was clean and there is good water flow. Not running it on land.

I assume you changed your name from Coz --> Ahhh Rested. A bit confusing.

LOC (Loss of Coolant) error is Kohler's poor error description for the water pressure sensor going below 0.5 psi, not the antifreeze coolant. Best thing to do as a test is disconnect the water pressure switch on the side of the heat exchanger and see if it runs more reliably. The sensor is open circuited when it has pressure, so disconnecting satisfies the logic. Unfortunately if the problem is very seldom, it's not great to run without the sensor, in the case you really do lose water.

If no error occurs, it might really be you have low pressure. It's common to get impeller bits stuck downstream in either the fuel module or the heat exchanger. Back flushing these seems to work for some people.

If the error changes to UU or UF the issue is more than likely the engine can't keep up with load. You won't be happy, but see this long thread me and OzRob just posted regarding a defective fuel module. Take a picture of the fuel module. 2 of 2 so far can be detected just by the level of corrosion on the outside top of the module.

How many hours on generator?

Lol my name was always Ahhh Rested. I’m a new boater and new to this site. I’ve been reading your conversations about the gen set and a possibility might be I have some impeller particles clogging the system. I’ll definitely have my mechanic look at it. Thanks for all your input.

Sorry, I was a bit confused at the start of the thread.

Let us know the answer to what fixes it.
