I am about to change the oil, filter, spark plugs, anode and coolant in my Kohler 5k Genset. The manual gives a few operating ranges for the oil they suggest to use. Mainly, since I'm in California/Nevada the temp never drops below 32. The sae 30 or 40 is on the chart for those ranges but I wanted some input...
Anyone see an advantage of sae 30 vs 40 ?

Synthetic vs Non-syn?

How about using that quicksilver 25w-40? (_I have some left over from the engine changes....)

It only holds 1.5qt so I don't care about cost(within reason).

Whaddaya think?

If you are changing yearly I would not spend the extra for synthetic oil. Use the weight the manual notes and judge what ambient temps. you are in most of the time.

I use SAE 30 in mine per the manual...

If I happened to have some 40w convenient, I would probably use it, but I plan all my oil changes and services at the same time and figure to use the same 25w40 FC3 that the mains get while I'm in there. Probably costs me an extra $6 over the base oil for the quart and a half it takes once a year. If I changed my behavior and wasn't so profligate...in only 120 oil changes I could save an entire tank of fuel. I may need to rethink my behavior.

south areas use 30. more north use 10w 30 or 10w 40 they hydraulic lifters most of the time
