Our Kohler 5KW SE generator is not working and the fuel lines appear to be dry from the main gas tanks :smt089. Anyone experience this at all? Any thoughts on if we need a new fuel pump or anything else. Hopefully it may just need to be primed. If it needs a prime anyone have any input on how to do it without too much trouble. Hoping to get down to the boat tomorrow to investigate further. Thanks in advance!

I had the same issue when I changed the remote fuel filter and did not prime it. I filled the filter and also put gas in the lines from the filter to the gen. It finally started. I now always refill the filter before reinstalling.

Thanks so much for the tip John! We will try it tomorrow and see what happens. Will keep you posted.

also there is a fuel bleed on top of the gen that gets all the air out, should be in the manual
Thanks Steve, we never got a manual when we bought the boat (along with a lot of other things missing). We will investigate the fuel bleed on top of the gen further. I should also probably try and find a manual on the web to download for future reference.

Thanks again!

if you can't find the manual let me know witch model you have and i can scan part of it for you, mine is for the 7.3 also covers the 5

Hi, check fuel pick up at the tank as if it is picking from the same tank as the motor then Sea ray may have a short pick up for the genset. This prevents you from funning the tank dry usually half of the tank, anything bellow that and the geni will run dry hence the genset not starting. Just another simple thing to try, but if run dry you will need to bleed the system. Good luck.

Thanks for the tips! Have not had a chance to check the genet out yet but really appreciate the help. Will let you know Steve if I can't find a manual online....still looking. I managed to find the other manuals for the 340 which are very handy on my iPad.

Not 100% sure on a 340, but my 300 has a fuel solenoid valve just ahead of the gen spin on fuel filter. Make certain the coil is pulling in, sometimes you can hear the valve click, or you can use a small screwdriver and feel for a magnetic pull coming from the coil. If the coil is toast, there is a manual overide to bypass the coil. Here is a link to how the manual overide works.

My bet you need to prefill the fuel filter as mentioned...

Thanks for the very usefdull info Jeff! I only just read your response, missed it somehow. Our big issue is finding the best way to prime it and we can't find a manual for it. I think Steve may have a manual that will work for our 5KW E series and he kindly said he would scan that section for me so am sending him PM.

Thanks again!

Hi all, more trouble with our genset :smt100. We had to buy a new pump last June which we installed and it ran great until a week ago. Tested the pump and it turned out to be bad. Bought and installed a new pump today (we tested the new pump before install to check it worked okay). We primed the system with a seperate 12 volt power supply directly into the pump and it worked well, but the genset still won't work :smt089. There is some evidence of corrison on the pump electrical connector (engine side) but it appears that the pump is not getting any power when we crank it, any ideas please?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have the 5E or the 5ECD generator? The 5ECD has the digital display, pushbuttons and is fuel injected with two fuel pumps. The 5E had a single pump and carb.

Helps to know which you have, I thought a 2006 had the 5ECD.

Sorry, it's the 5E only has a single pump and carb.

No reason to be sorry, you said 5E in the first post and just wanted to make sure.

Did you try to run it with 12v hooked up direct to pump to see if its a fuel pump power feed or other issue? The carb float bowl should run it for a bit even if the pump is not working when cranking/running.

Best to find a service manual, they are out there on several sites for download. It will sow you how to check the LEDs on the control board to see if the relay or something else is working for the fuel pump.

Google Kohler TP-5986, it will take some digging but its out there to download.

Thanks for the response KP49, meant to respond yesterday but was a bit busy, our first grandchild was born:) My husband tells me he thinks he's solved it (with some help from a local mechanic). We have the manuals downloaded now, but the problem he thinks it is the pump electrical wire connector, so will get a new one on the week-end.

Thanks again!
