I have (3) switches on my cabin panel for the generator.
One for the fan, another is a rocker pre-heat down start up and a third that says on.
I have no clue what the on switch dose?

If its wired like my same year 300da then the middle "on" switch enables the power to the right switch. It must be depressed to start the genny with the right switch. Leave that middle switch on when the genny is running. It also provides power to all the safety circuitry on the genny. The right switch is simply the start/stop rocker switch. Push and hold the top of it until the genny starts. Then release it. Push the bottom of it to stop the genny. The "preheat" label is irrelevant for your genny and is just there because it is a universal switch panel used for other types of generators.

Start procedure:
Turn on bilge blower run 4 minutes
Turn on the On switch
Press rocker switch to start

I cannot speak on the Kohler, but, FWIW, on the Westerbeke, you hold the pre-heat switch for 10 seconds to run the fuel pump to prime the carb before pressing the start button. Your mileage may vary.

Also, on the Westerbeke, holding the pre-heat switch disables the low oil-pressure shutoff, so that the engine has time to build pressure.

+1. Mine does not have a pre-heat switch just the "on switch" and then the starter switch. To shut it off turn the "on" switch off and then hold the "starter" rocker switch down to shut off the genny.
