Knocking noise in out drive

Finally took the boat out this weekend on big water and it started to knock.It is coming from outdrive the u joints are good anywhere else to look Thanks for any help.

When my OD made a knocking noise it ended up being a broken tooth from the upper gear cluster. The tooth had lodged in a place that one of the gears rubbed it making a lot of noise.

The only way I could be sure it was the OD was to pull it off the boat and start the motor. You will know immediately if the noise is in the motor or the OD. If it is in the OD then the only way to determine the problem is to open it up.

Sounds a like a lot of work. Hope you have good luck with this one.

Blew the lower end not good time for a new one

I to blew up my stern drive last year I have a 268 da 1987 454 alpha 1 bought an aftermarket on line $1600. Way cheaper than merc easy to install and so far about 100 hrs and no problems. Best part it's all new.

Gasamp, Can you give a little more info on the replacement, such as where you bought it online? I don't need one right now, but I'd like to know where to buy at a great price, just in case.

Google SEI outboards they have a 3 yr warenty. You can buy lower or upper sep but at the price they charge it's worth it do it all.

Thanks for that info. A complete replacement for the Alpha 1 shows $1195.00. I can breath easy now, knowing I won't need to take a second mortgage on my house to fund replacing a bad drive. Three year warranty sounds good, and hopefully you won't need to use it.

I've seen used ones advertised locally for about half that. Of course, there wouldn't be any warranty, but if you were looking to save a few bucks it's always an option.

I have a 2 year old SEI replacement for my alpha I. I noticed some knocking this season that sounded almost like a popcorn maker. WELL........... Saturday my temp spiked and I was smoking. Found out that knocking noise was a damaged impeller. Boat is being pulled to replace. Gotta check with SEI but pretty sure that isn't covered under the normal 3 yr warranty. Other than that, the drive is a great drive. I'd recommend it. SEI is easy to deal with and has great customer service. Good luck and let us know how you make out!
