Looking at getting an ereader as a gift. Does anyone have experience with either? One key thing is being able to be out around the pool or boat in the sun and be able to read...

Thanks for your input...

I bought a Kindle for my wife last spring. She loves it. She has just about stopped reading anything in hardcopy and uses the Kindle almost exclusively. No problems with resolution when out on the boat. I have used it myself, but still prefer to turn pages.

I have been using the Sony versions for years now. Based on my research though, I will go with the Kindle when I use this one up. Most all of them (Kindle, Sony, Nook) use the same technology for the screen, so they all look very similar. Any of them that you may go with will be a good experience. The Kindle has the wi-fi downloadable book function though. Thats nice when your out of reading material and not close to your computer....

+1  The Admiral loves hers almost as much as her new slot machine ap on her IPhone!

Kindle all the way. You can't compete with Amazon when it comes to book selection, ease of use and ease of purchase. Plus, the Kindle apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry, PC and Mac mean that you can read your books anywhere, anytime. It remembers what page you were on between devices too.

I did the same comparison this year and decided on Kindle for my wife.

My wife has the Kindle and I have a Nook furnished by work. They are both excellent and you can't go wrong with either. Right now you can loan books on the Nook, but I understand Kindle will be doing that soon. Either way go with the 3G as you can download anywhere without wi-fi.

Why not go with an IPad?

It will cost more but down the road it will also offer you many more option.

This is a joint gift from me and the GF for her Mom and Dad. If we could afford the IPad, this thread would have never been started. Agreed, it would be the best, but $$$ is not there to throw at one.

My wife loves her Nook with the 3G, uses it all the time, lots of free books. Come to think about it we never seam to talk any more, it might be a good gift for a Mother-In-Law.:smt043

One more question... Can you do crosswords or word searches with the Kindle?

My wife loves her Kindle. As far as she knows, it is a pure reader. No crosswords or word search games. She says that the new color Nook reader has the capability of "borrowing" books from libraries. I might worry about color washout using it on the boat, though. No such problems with the Kindle. The brighter, the better.

I love my Kindle, and it is as readable in direct sunlight as a printed page. For the boat, I also have a M-Edge Guardian case:

The Kindle 3 is a nice enhancement over my Kindle 2, and if you don't need the 3G conection you can save $50 and get the wifi only version.

Also, Amazon customer service is second to none should something bad happen to your Kindle. My first K2 developed a screen issue, and they sent me a new one using next day shipping.

That 3G feature is great! My wife has a Kindle and brought it along on a bus trip to NYC last weekend. Being bored, I grabbed it, but there were no good books on it(IMO!). While cruising down the road in a charter bus, I was able to find a whole slew of newspapers, selected one, and began reading the days news events immediately. I was impressed. :smt001

Thanks to this thread, I just ordered a Kindle for my wife. I almost bought an Ipad, but the Kindle got better reviews for reading in direct sunlight. The fact that WIFI and 3g is included (no monthly fees) sold me on it! If I was buying it for myself, I would have gone for the IPAD, but my wife will only use it for reading books.

Awesome! Thanks again for all the input. I just picked up the Kindle at BestBuy on lunch break.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

My sister has a Kindle. She's had it for about a month. She said she rides the bus for 1 hr or so each way to /from work, so she reads during that time. She really likes it.
