Has anyone gone through from the north side this season? What does the channel look like and how badly shoaled in is it?

Alubell,
We were on the boat last weekend, didn't go out though. Saw at least dozen or so boats run the north channel, did not seem to be a problem. The marina hasn't put any notices regarding any issues.

The latest on the Kent Narrows north channel

Letter from Dock master

In case anyone hasn't heard by now the water was turned back on in the marina with out any major problems.

The north bathhouse was reopened this past Monday, April 8th.

The latest update on the north channel dredging is that the Army Core of Engineers has finally approved the project and the county has financially approved the bidding for the dredging company. The projected time period to start is between April and May, anticipating to be done before Memorial Day. They seem to be cutting it close but hopefully they'll complete in time.

Fuel dock hours: The fuel dock will be open 7 days a week on a call-ahead bases from 9am-4:30pm from now until summer when I have full time dock hands return to help me out.

Current water temperature in the marina is 50.2 degrees.

Thanks,

Here is the newest update from our marina

Letter from Dock master

Everything is going very well at the marina, it's been great to see so many familiar faces out cleaning and prepping their boats for the season. Our fuel dock hours will remain the same which are 9am-4:30pm seven days a week from now until memorial day.

I recently went out to the north channel and took depth readings myself, sorry to say but no dredging has been done at this time. In the new channel which is marked by the green buoy at low tide is 8 feet.

I'm enlisting the help of all slip holders: send transients to our marina for the summer! Here's how it works, if you the slip holder invite a friend to come stay this season as a transient you will receive a $25 gift card good for Red Eye's or the fuel dock. Just call the main office and tell us which dates your friend will be coming, then have them call us and make the reservation. Be sure that they mention you (slip holders name) that recommended us when they call. Your gift card can be redeemed the day of the transients arrival.

Current water temperature in the marina: 54.9 degrees

Thanks,

Saw a picture of the Narrows last night on Facebook, it was frozen over! Mears posted it. Do think global warming may be over? Still in the water, hope to get down there soon, maybe when it is in the high 30's some weekend soon.

Have picked up a bareboat a few times from a charter company located there. One of their check out items for a charter is for you to take the boat out of the marina and pull it up to the fuel dock. Interesting with sometimes 4+ knots flowing through there. The bascule bridge just below that photo is interesting with an ebb tide flowing. No way you can stay below the 6knot speed limit if you want control.

Converse, I thought the same thing, waiting to see what the marina basin is like. Talked to the marina yesterday, say all is good & bubblers are working hard!

Football Fan, you are right about the bridge, 6 knots don't cut it. Had 4 boats get cozy with the bridge piers, including myself, all due to people fishing around the piers & suddenly showing up in the opening causing you to shut down. You end up at the mercy of the current & no reaction time. I have issues with people fishing, they should also be more responsible where they set up camp, to dangerous in the Narrows with all the traffic. Enough with the editorial

WOW! I don't think I've seen the narrows frozen over since the late 70's early 80's. I also agree with the fishing folks around the pilings, had a situation once transiting the narrows where we had oncoming traffic larger than us so elected to move to the opposite side of the piling on the main channel to let the larger vessel have the channel and a boat fishing the pilings came from behind the piling directly in front of us and I was forced to stop and reverse motion to keep from hitting the fishing boat, and even after avoiding the fishing boat,(the fishing boat made no attempt to move to help avoid a collision), they were less than friendly if you get my drift.

Tony... are you organizing the CSR Middle Bay round up this year? We can all be your friends and you can cash in on the gift cards :)

James, We should do it this weekend, everyone can bring their ice skates! Have to see how work is going, we can put a post out in a couple months and see if everyone wants to come back to Mears. After seeing that picture I hope we still have a boat, left it in the water this year again, Mears said the bubblers are working so far:smt101
