Hey I was getting pretty good at docking and pulling into a slip using only the transmissions.

I was pulling into the docks at St. Helens Oregon on the Columbia River. I had a strong down river current on my bow and a 20kn wind at my stern. I approached the dock slowly using the current to slow my approach and the wind to ease me up to the dock. I was using the trannies slow and easy. Just as I thought I was going to impress everyone with my abilities "SNAP!" The port tranny cable broke! I panicked and threw some power with the port engine.

Now i am approaching the dock at rocket speed! I finally hit the ignition switch! I used the stbd engine to slow me down and I managed to dock her. After tying up I went below and changed my tighty whities!!!:smt009

I was trying to figure out how to get her back to port when it occured to me I have controls in the cabin.........

a few boats ago we had a Grand Banks 36, it had a flybridge with controls but no engine start button. I had the boat for a while and came to the conclusion that the idle was set too high... so I adjusted the idle down a few hundred rpm. I ran the boat this way for about a year until one day I came into the slip a little hot and dropped the boat into reverse... thunk.... then silence. I dont think a gymnast could of dropped over the side of the flybridge onto the side deck and hit the started button and throttled her up any faster. The stem just kissed the dock.. no damage!. Needless to say the idle went back up and a starter button was also installed in the flybridge. Boats have their own special way of biting back when we least expect it!

Know the feeling man! I was in St. Helen's the Thursday before Labor Day and it was a ***** trying to dock with the current and 20+mph winds! I had a mutiny as my admiral wouldn't help with the lines or fenders! I finally pulled the 8yr old out to run the lines out to the bow! Very nerve wracking indeed!@!

After a full engine recondition on a commercial paua boat I was carrying out a sea trial. In an unpopulated area idling in forward I opened the hinged engine cover and took a few IR heat readings. Happy things were ok I dropped the engine cover and that's where things got interesting.... An unused bracket on the inside of the cover caught the throttle and took it to WOT. I was pinned in the rear corner and then partially buried by my tool box and it's contents as the 350 on a Volvo duo prop roared into life.
The torque kicked the wheel to port and I found myself crawling on my hands and knees at full speed until I reached the key.
I lay in the bottom of the boat catching my breath for quite some time.
I still think of that day and how ugly it could have got. I was by myself and if I had fallen over board the boat would probably still be going in circles in a red sea!
It's amazing how fast things can turn to custard.
