I believe I've read all of the other threads and looking for some more help. I have a 6.5 kw Quicksilver that was out of the boat when I purchased it. It has been diagnosed with a short. Engine runs but needs a tune up. There is a shop in town that "may" be able to rewire it and get it producing power. If this works I'll have about $1500 tied up in the shop time ($500) plus the cost for the electric motor company ($1000) to rebuild. But can't guarantee its even rebuildable until I spend some more money to have it broken down further.
Friend of a friend has a 4kw Quicksilver that he removed from same vintage boat when the timing gear broke. He yanked it and replaced with a used westerbeke. I can buy it for $650. Is it possible to put his generator head on my engine? If so, is it worth it? For our use, I think the 4kw will work, but I'd love to here your input.
I don't mind spending a few thousand to end up with a working generator. Is it possible to walk away from the quicksilver problems and swap to a different brand without dropping $7K-$10K when I account for the retrofit?
Thanks for your input.
