Jet Ski hit my boat

So we took the boat out for the last trip before I leave on deployment. I had a few friends from work onboard and we were heading to a spot thats good for wakeboarding. Along the way, we run into some jet skis buzzing around. I slowed down to find a good spot to pass them and waited.

There was one jet ski that was just ahead off to starboard, he was stopped facing forward. I was waiting to see what he was going to do. Without looking he takes off to port. So he goes off. I decide to pass to starboard and begin to speed up. As we're passing him (on his starboard side), he starts to turn to starboard....right at us. My passengers all yell at him, he and his passenger have their heads completely turned to port! Why someone would turn one way while looking the other is beyond me.:smt021 I cranked my boat to starboard to get away but he came in too fast and hit us.

The impact felt like a jolt to the boat and it threw them off their ski. Everyone was fine, my boat got the most damage. Looks like a few big chips out of the gelcoat. I can see some fiberglass but it doesnt look like it broke through it. The hull is still hard to the touch, no soft parts.

I called harbor patrol and they showed up along with SDPD. Funny thing is that they were filiming some TV reality show about lifeguards or something and they had cameras all over us.

The harbor patrol jumped in and checked my boat for damage. The impact was just under the water line, it hit low because we were turning away from them.

The driver of the jet ski tried to say that we turned into them. I had 5 people onboard, all of them saw it from beginning to end and you can tell who hit who from the impact point.

I HATE JET SKIS

Sorry to hear about the incident. The good part is no one was hurt. Does the Jet Ski owner have insurance? At any rate let your insurance company know what happened and make sure you have the boat looked over thoroughly and repaired by a competent Fiberglass person.

Did the driver of the Jet Ski get cited?

Around here they are referred to as 'lake lice', at least the ones with the idiots driving.... Those with responsible operators are having loads of fun.

No insurance? Looks like you could own a nice jet ski that was in a recent fender bender!

OMG! Sorry to hear about your accident, good that no one's hurt!

Glad to hear everyone was ok. Do we get to see pics of the damage?

A few years back, I watched a wave runner t-bone another one at a speed high enough to ramp it. Knocked the driver off and about killed her. They had to air care her off the island. Busted jaw, leg broken in four places and some broken ribs. I was on a boat about 30 yards away when it happened. I get nervous whenever I have anyone on the tube or kneeboard and those idiots (not a strong enough word, however I will keep it clean) are around.

We'ved boated in our area for over 30 years and have seen first hand the growth in popularity with PWC. We think they are fun, we think they have their place, however, the combination of speed, unskilled drivers and in some cases booze, these types of situations are becoming more frequent.

Glad everyone was ok.

Scary stuff. I'm glad there were no injuries. Didn't your fenders help? (sorry I couldn't resist:grin:) Seriously, thinking about what the outcome could have been I'm glad you and your friends are ok.

Yeah, that's amazing and I'm also glad everyone's ok. Best of luck getting this resolved. Also, be safe on your deployment and thank you for serving our Country.

We had a similar event happen when we had an '04 200 Sport. We were on a narrow lake on a holiday (4th of July). We were on the right hand of the channel like everyone else was going in the same direction as everyone else. A couple of jet skis rounded a corner and continued on going right through the middle of everyone going in the opposite direction as they were. One jet skier, while WOT, decided it was a good idea to look behind him for a solid 10 seconds. A lot can happen in 10 seconds at wide open throttle.

He ended up veering right in front of us. I was anticipating trouble, so I had already brought my speed down and was coming off plane, which was lucky for us. Instead of him riding up into our bow, our nose was way up and he just slapped into the the front of our boat. Minimal damage to our gelcoat, but he was thrown from his ski. I was about to jump in the water and drown him (just kidding of course), but when he came up his bone was hanging out of his elbow. I made sure my boat was ok and sent him on his way to get to a hospital asap.

The next day, while cleaning the boat, we found a bunch of skin wedged in the rub rail. Naaaaaasty. :)

MXer478;

Gotta agree.

I personally LOVE jetskis. I have what is now considered a low powered ski, and I just smile every time I take it out on the water. Just the same, I consider the jetski far more dangerous than my SeaRay. It's fun. . but one must treat it with respect.

A few weeks back, I watched two riders get tossed from their ski. All by themselves, and apparently stone sober. They just took a wave wrong, and off they went.

(BTW: I just broke the motor mounts on my ski last week. $$$$$! Fortunately, it didn't sink with me on it . . and I managed to get it out of the water before it sank at the dock)

Gents,

Thanks for the kind words. It's an honor to serve! We'll see you guys on the water in about 7 months!

I'll visit the site a few times while overseas.

Take care,

Jeremiah

They are called "gnats" around here. Glad no one was hurt. Hope everything gets squared away with repairs, etc.

Im glad everyone is ok, and I truly wish you a safe return from duty.

In the meantime, Mr. Wakeboarder...put some vids up on the wakeboarding threag!!!!
